Or are students who are more vulnerable to suicidal thoughts having a persecution complex about being discriminated against…

CletusDSpuckler t1_j4ydn5f wrote

Indeed.

A couple of years ago, I read an article in the NYTimes from a woman who was complaining about a lifetime of discrimination and micro aggressions.

Every example in the article - every single one - I had experienced in my life. I know no one is discriminating against me as a regular white man in a white majority city.

Some people are rude, ignorant, self absorbed, or any combination. If you see everything as discrimination, maybe you're the problem.

But as an athiest white man in a white religious majority?

But as as a homeless white man in a white majority city?

But as a fat white man in a sexy white majority city?

But as an old white man in a young majority city?

Lemme’ guess…. Zero background in psychology, but entirely confident in your mastery of the subject?

Since when has suicidal thoughts lead to a persecution complex? Did you stop to think for even two second before you decided to say something this ignorant?

>Students who report experiencing discrimination are more vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and behaviors, study finds

Sorted by race suicide rates from highest (25:100k) to lowest (5:100k) is American Indian/Alaskan, White, National Average, Black, Hispanic, Asian. With Whites being x3 times higher than Black.

So either this study is a lie or you can discriminate against whites. Your move Reddit.

As a kid that was bullied I can tell you that it is both. I was definitely bullied my entire childhood but I also had a persecution complex that complicated it. Towards the end of high school I dropped the persecution complex but the bullying didn't stop I just didn't care anymore

Discrimination and institutional racism are huge issues in the USA. For example a poor white family can secure lower home loan interest rates than a high income black family. This is one example of how things aren’t balanced for some POC and discrimination is just one more stressor to a general system that isn’t fair. As a black woman I’ve had people be openly racist/ sexist towards me and it’s very different than someone just being rude. Theres a lot of evidence regarding discrimination and it’s negative impact on marginalized groups & one random NYT article doesn’t disprove this https://www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/high-income-black-homeowners-receive-higher-interest-rates-low-income-white-homeowners

We're do they find the 'hasn't been discriminated against' people. Fairly certain everyone has been discriminated against at some point.

I would strongly like to see these studies done on autism as I believe it to be the most discriminated against and unspoken of issue on the entire plate. I think people are simply not aware of what goes/has gone on in this sphere and it needs to be expounded on to the public.

That's someone that doesn't want to feel guilty for bullying the weird kid in high-school

That kid you bullied probably wanted to off themselves. bullying IS discrimination

Yes, there are already some studies showing much higher rates of suicide in autistics, when compared to the general population, so there can be a strong link, which is a good direction for new studies.

Pretty much this. Felt profiled when I went into a luxury store. They kept thinking I was going to steal and they weren't very welcoming. It's like because of how I dress and that I'm introverted.

It certainly did not make me feel good about myself having to experience this. I thought to myself: is this how black people feel?

mmmmmm I don’t think so. I think this is one of those situations where left-handedness suddenly became a lot more common when kids weren’t getting physically assaulted for it in school.

and like. this is not a personal attack, you’re not a bad person but WOW people are so ready to dehumanize a child of color. if you’ve got a sensitive kid whose feelings are easily hurt, they’re extra vulnerable. you don’t punish them for it, you just gotta be nicer to them. I find it just. absolutely baffling that anyone would look at a hurt child and say “you’re too sensitive.”

if it’s gonna hurt the kid, you protect the kid. even if the kid IS overly sensitive. because at the end of the day, we can and should give up racism. but we don’t want to give up healthy kids.

and i just. really feel the need to stress this. they’re kids, dude. they’re still learning how to be people. they don’t have the cognitive tools to process discrimination without personalizing it and they also haven’t been on the planet long enough to emotionally regulate like an adult would. every child is more sensitive than an adult. and we have a group of children more sensitive to racism specifically. kill the racism, protect the kids. seems pretty simple to me

Nobody worth listening to has ever said that discrimination against white people is impossible.

"There is systemic discrimination against" is not equivalent to "discrimination is only possible against."

Neurodivergent here. I was bullied all throughout school to the point of near suicide, even the teachers joined in and tormented me. I can't think of a time in my life I haven't been bullied, abused, and treated like trash.

Moving from a tolerant, diverse Bay Area city to small town Texas during my formative years was pretty much the worst decision my mom made for me, went from "I wanna go to outer space when I grow up" to "I don't even wanna wait at the bus stop to go to school because these cops randomly pull up and ask "what are you little ----ers doing?!?"" Man, I hated my life out there

I was just asking a question, please don’t assume I was having an attitude.

My thinking is - maybe paranoia and suicidal thoughts are different sides to the same coin. Hard to tell which is face up or face down.

Some people who feel they are discriminated against - have been discriminated against

Some of them have not. A subset of the people who have not been discriminated against are:

1 - looking to profit from perceived discrimination Or 2 - Paranoid
