Just assuming here, but I would think GM is aware the only way to make this work is to make their UX/OS competent.
I like having Android Auto since my car's built-in system is garbage, but if it worked like Tesla's does, I'd be pretty happy with that.

This is all you need to know about this. It's all about monetizing. You want turn signals? That will be $5/month please.

Why not just offer both?

Why would you pay 5/month subscription if you aren't forced to?
The thing that gm is missing is they are behind the competition and that is not a good time to make your offerings less desirable. I would not buy a car without android auto much less a gm without android auto.

This. Is. Dumb. SO DUMB!

Why not have both? This makes no sense

Android Automotive is different from Android Auto. Android Auto allows you to connect your smart phone to your car. Android Automotive is the car's OS, essentially. They want all of the I/O to go through that, and not your phone. That way they can charge you a subscription fee for anything you use connected to it.

Pretty happy with my Bolt EUV, but this means I won’t choose to buy another GM EV in the future. CarPlay is non negotiable.

I specifically chose my trim model BECAUSE of apple CarPlay. If they didn’t have it I would have stuck with the base. And now that I been car shopping again, apple CarPlay is must. But also I don’t buy American garbage, and especially not a GM lol

Like I needed another reason to not buy crappy GM products.

Automobile touch screens are unsafe AF.
All I need is the ability to play media on my phone and cast it to the car's screen and audio system.
That's it.
Anything else to control the car needs some hardware knobs and buttons.
Car companies suck at making digital products and they need to knock it the fuck off.

Very dumb. Very short sighted. Very stupid.

No CarPlay is a dealbreaker for me.

This smells of the same thing ford did with the Microsoft sync system, which was a huge pile of garbage.

GM is soooo exclusive, now a days.

Kinda already doing it. I have a 2022 Silverado refresh with built in Google Maps. Doesn’t work if you don’t buy the OnStar data plan. So, I just use CarPlay.

Between my states heavy handed approach on forcing electrics and manufacturers turning buying a car into a subscription service, I'm glad I have two relatively new cars and am gonna be able to sit on what I have for a minimum of 7 years.
Covid happened and now you can't own shit without being nickeled and dimed into debt.
nucflashevent t1_jefmgsn wrote
You know, I've honestly never seen the point of either Android Auto or CarPlay.
All I want is a Bluetooth receiver and I'll handle the rest on my phone...easy as that 👍

Waze mirrored to the nav alone makes CarPlay awesome. The integration with iMessage is also a plus. But I use mine almost exclusively to mirror Waze.

I'm an Android user, and I know this is dumb.
The awesome thing about Android Auto and Apple Car Play is they are updated through an app on my phone. An app that Apple and Google can upgrade and update to keep it doing relevant stuff.
Instead, GM will replace that with software in the car that will be essentially abandonware or will charge out the wazoo for updates. F that. I'll avoid this and stick to a phone based car head unit.
