This is a bad idea that will diminish their user base. I hope they continue to support SMS.

Really unhappy about this. I think this is a mistake. Been using signal for sms for years. I only know a few people who actually use signal, so I'm not sure if I'll keep using it if I have to find a new app for sms.

I do not think that this is a mistake.

Signal stores messages in an encrypted fashion, even if they're not transmitted via signal's protocol. The result of this is that if you don't back up your signal messages from your *phone* (not any other connected device), you will loose all of your SMS messages in addition to your signal messages if your phone were to be destroyed or lost or whatever.

Signal also has to do things like support MMS, which is a bullshit protocol that has varying implementations between devices.

It's better to just use a separate application for those protocols.

Yeah they do. I had originally stopped using mine when I was using a galaxy S8 that couldn't be updated and there was security exploits that could be run through the default app. Using signal was an easy way to avoid that.

I suppose now that I'm on a new phone I could go back to the stock app.

Well as a Dutch person myself, I have never used FB messenger. But you are right in that nobody uses SMS anymore, pretty much only at festivals where it is the only way to connect with your friends since 4G connection is so bad then.
