Edit: Just looked at an old bill. It was $67.24 a month if you include the rental fees for two cable boxes as well. Insane.

Rates increase with utilities, because the extraction industry can be volatile. A cable company with shitty customer service, an aging infrastructure, and no service change is just raising rates because they can. Keep in mind Comcast annual gross profit for 2020 was $37.334B. They’re raising rates because they’re not increasing profit. Not that they’re losing money or unprofitable. Just didn’t GROW.

Each year negotiations with all major broadcasters gets more and more expensive with more and more affiliate stations being bundled into the contracts, thus increasing expenses. Also the aging infrastructure requires routine upkeep, upgrade, and maintenance. People often forget that these are real costs for providers that do in fact go up every year just like everything else.

Probably better, for everyone involved, than using a government assistance program. More of a discount, more flexibility, and it's the cable company giving up that discount, instead of it being subsidized.

If you get only Internet through Comcast they send you a streaming box. I thought it was going to just be a bunch of pay services, but it comes preloaded with many free services including ones that work like cable/over the air with different channels and predetermined shows running. Comcast is sending me mixed messages.

My elderly dad and I also found out that OTA TV has come a long way. These are all channels only elderly people like, but we get 30 of them or something.

I have been pondering a switch to T-Mobile's 5G home internet service...slower than my current 1G (ish) Comcast internet, but I have never been thrilled with my service quality anyway. Soooo...if they up my price, I am gone. I don't even have any equipment to return, so all I need to do is place a phone call.

We had TMobile. It didn't work well. We went to Verizon. It didn't work well. Back to Comcast.

Cell tower internet is always going to have higher latency and packet loss versus DOCSIS (coax). If you are only using the web for streaming and browsing the web it is perfectly acceptable.

I live in a comcast monopoly zone or I'd have ditched them long ago. My bill for basic internet is $135 and its like 75mb down 10mb up and there is a data cap.

They have to pay their employees more. They have to pay more for their equipment/trucks/gas/everything else. Inflation impacts every industry.

Right, companies wouldn’t provision jet mobile hot spots to employees if mobile internet didn’t work just fine and dandy. 5G is more than capable for typical people, including gaming. The folks who raise that particular issues are usually into hyper competitive gaming which is nowhere near widespread appeal for normal usage. I’m not even talking very big demographic jumps; most people don’t play games so dependent on the lowest latency possible because competition for fun fucking sucks after a long day working in competitive environments.

It is, of course, region dependent. People in the boonies are going to suffer the most, but that is also true for “landline” style internet service.

Granted she's in the boons a bit, but my mom was getting ~1mbps with T-Mobile. Unbearable. I think you would need to be close to a 5G tower to see something worth it.

The government assistance has been great! Minimal effort to apply and instant $30 a month discount on internet. Everyone with low income should apply!
