I would very much like to see this go to trial. Not specifically about tiktok, but it might start to shead some light data tracking and privacy by apps in general.

I'm in social media marketing and do a lot of business analytics for tik tok, meta, and Google. I can say what I can harness from each platform for free is horrifyingly accurate and specific. If I pay for ads it'll be even more specific. I can tell my Google ad to Target single women with car lease coming to end, mean income of 50-70k, with 2 children, in (zip code) who likes off roading.

It's scary

Oh ya. I have researched the topic heavily, and am a front end dev, who has done a LOT of SEO work for marketing/advertising firms and SEO focused companies. The tools are very scary, even at the free tiers.

Read about the Twitter Files which Elon recently released to the public. The FBI and the CIA even had secret moderators at twitter that had access to see DMs, and artificially pump/dump trends.

I'd like TikTok banned for my own sanity

i would like the goverment to make laws about what is and is not allowed by a social media company. so it applies to all companies fairly. would do a lot more good.

Ban all social. This includes forums. Go outside and talk to people. Mail letters to random addresses. Prank call strangers and tell them their refridgerator is running.

Where’s the proof of documentation? Since the comment you just left is your opinion is it bought and paid for?

I would rather see Facebook banned, but Tiktok is a good start.

Don't get me wrong, I understand a lot of people rely on Facebook, and it'll be harder to disband it. I'd be happy with Facebook just split up, and not stay under Meta. Facebook/Meta has too many fingers in different pies, like many other companies.

The spyware/political part of the subject is agreeable, the mental health part is laughable and naive.

But even then, there are so many Chinese apps that have the same data collection capabilities. Tencent games probably rake in more users than TikTok could ever hope for. PUBG, Call of Duty, League of Legends... these aren't small time indies.

Explain again how this differs from Facebook:

One can think of many reasons to worry about TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform. Its executives seem to lie habitually.
Its opaque algorithms and data-collection capabilities appear to be
tailor-made to spread propaganda or collect sensitive information. Quite frankly, many of the most popular videos on the app seem positively deranged.

Easy, Facebook is an American company that spies for the American government. Tiktok is a direct competitor, so the US gov is seeking a ban to protect Facebook.

Why else would Facebook be paying a republican firm to spread misinformation about tiktok?

Facebook funded anti-TikTok campaign through GOP firm

Because it's a direct competitor? Neither have to be a propaganda arm to have a business case for hurting the other. Not that I disagree with you

I think it'd just be fair play.

Most Western countries have to give a ton of local control over to Chinese companies (read: the CCP) in order to access the Chinese market. Those that don't play ball or threaten the iron-fisted political status quo, don't get to make money in China.

When the Chinese start having to do the same thing to get into the West, they might realize how abusive this practice is.
