Could be that a lot of people just don't like it. That's OK, as it is OK that some people do.

A lot of people like it, a lot of people also think it's just ok. But the vocal ones seem to be the ones that dispose it specifically because it's not the canon they know

That honestly isn’t what I have observed. Most of the complaints I have seen largely are concerned with the quality of writing and storytelling.
