Honestly it just feels like watching 2 different DnD campaigns. I don’t understand the hate both these shows are getting. But who knows. May be I’ll change my opinion as I progress through the seasons on both the shows.

Blood Origins feels like its being DMd by someone who is more concerned with the fighting than world building. And the party is so rigid. There’s a fighter, bard, sorcerer, barbarian and they have to kill the evil mage. Typical run of the mill campaign.

Willow is more laidback. The target audience is probably YA. But that’s ok. The DM is definitely more concerned about character building. Not so much about World building or fighting. Which is very good!! It’s lighthearted.

To each their own I guess…

some scenes it feel like watching a larp fan show. I had the same with Rings of power and wheel of time. I can't pinpoint why exacly but i think it has to do with the bad script and clean clothes.

Clean costumes is a big problem on these WB style fantasy shows. Don't know if they are renting the costumes, or only bought one, or what....but it makes me very aware they are wearing a costume. The design is usually kind of shit as well. Like large pieces of toga style cloth. Shit you could almost make with little experience.

The writing is campy and samey. The diverse cast of characters is fine, but give different ethnic groups different regions and cultures. This homogenized stuff is difficult to watch. I mean, especially if it is in someone else's world in which people looked different depending on region and culture.

I don't really know who they are making these shows for.

Well, if I wanted to play D&D or LARP I would go do those things or watch/listen to the many, many D&D streams or podcasts out there. If a high-budget TV show has storytelling and acting which is worse than my home game or which is akin to bad/average DMing, something has gone wrong.

I can't speak to The Witcher, but a big part of Willow's problem is the core audience grew up in the 30ish years since it's release, while the show feels like a step backwards. That's not inherently wrong mind you, as maybe Disney is looking to build something for a younger audience. But much like the comic book industry, when you go hunting for a customer base that isn't into your product, at the cost of the one that is, you risk making almost nobody happy. And when that happens, the product suffers.

I enjoyed Blood Origins...but I'm not harboring resentment over Henry Cavill leaving, never read the books or so I have no attachment to the original story, and never suffered the delusion that Witcher was great television in the first place. It was a holiday popcorn binge, entertaining but forgettable, but not significantly worse than most Netflix fare.

Just posted a comment about this on another post, it's basically prime time mediocrity trying to cater for a wide range of viewers (which doesn't work and never will). My second point was, is it worth spending your money on watching it, probably not.

It's fine if you like it, but to pretend it isn't shit is disingenuous. I liked Adventures of Pluto Nash....but I completely understand that it is shit.

Why are there so few people like you who understands that if you look like something it doesn't actually mean it's good.

Its funny because I was just having that convo with my own DM that the Blood Origin crew are definitely a bunch of over-optimizing murderhobos.
