18-year old who has a "learner's privilege card" from Vermont for driving a vehicle (aka learners permit), but as I understand it this cannot get you through TSA because there is no photo. She has no other photo ID.

Is it possible to get a Vermont Non-Driver ID with a photo while you wait? I believe these are "Real ID" with photo.

I've tried to get this answered with the VT DMV but I cannot find this information online and there is no way to speak to a human over the phone, so I'm hoping Reddit may know.

I am not hopeful because when I renewed my license, I didn't get my new one in the mail for around 2 weeks. We would need it by Friday (today is Wednesday) in order to fly over the weekend.

Thank you!

I'm not sure about the DMV, but you could consider trying for an Urgent appointment at the Passport Center in St. Albans. They can process and have a passport set up same day, but getting an appointment tomorrow or Friday could be difficult.

Since it's for international travel, you'll need to show that you plan on going at least to Canada for a night. You can find a hotel reservation that's cancelable after the appointment to have that proof.

Thank you, I did consider that but what I'm seeing is that "emergency" requests require planned international travel, and still have a 72-hour turn around. Since this is for a domestic flight, I didn't think she would qualify. But perhaps we can do the Canadian hotel reservation like you said. Thanks for the tip!

Whatever the outcome of this short-term issue, the smart option is to just have the 18-year old apply for a US Passport going forward. Will be good for 10 years.

I totally agree and we need to do that. This is just an unplanned trip that snuck up on us. Haven't bought tickets yet, and probably won't because I don't see anyway she can get a valid ID this soon.

Theoretically, if you go to the dmv asap, and get one issued it will be in the system. Then, you can use the procedure for a lost or stolen ID. Also you should call the airport and ask about their procedures if possible.

Thanks, good tip. They are going to the DMV this afternoon, hoping to replace the non-photo learner's permit with one that has a photo, or whatever else they might recommend given the time constraints. I don't think it's possible to get a Real ID expedited but perhaps you can get a non-Real ID learners permit with photo. We shall see. I think this qualifies under TSA's rule:

>Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)

I have heard a few tips from you and others about the workarounds for lost and stolen, etc., but I am wary of doing this. We are going to be a family of 4 traveling together and if one of us gets stuck, it will be a mess 😧 Travel is hard enough already.

For sure. Good luck, and remember that most of the staff at the airport want to make it work too.

Cut out a pic of your teen's face and tape it over Benjamin Franklin's.

Not sure what the return currency equivalent would be.

LOL. I think we'd end up in a different vacation destination with that trick.

They issue the same day I think if you go to the dmv and fill out all the paperwork

Thank you. We tried yesterday, can't get us one right away, it has to be mailed. They gave her a temporary but that's basically a print-out with a B&W photo on it. It's technically not valid for anything but driving.

Next, they went to BTV and asked the TSA person if that was acceptable, and got a "not really but if you bring other things like a RX prescription, a debit card, they might let you in." Ooof. Not very confidence-inspiring.

The real ID law isn’t in effect yet

True, but technically the TSA still requires a state-issued photo ID

Yes, you can. My brother did it. You will need to wait at dmv though until someone sees you as you don’t have an appt. may be a long wait.
