For the same reason that every media outlet has always called every similar race the moment that polls close: the polling errors in the days/weeks leading up to the election would have to be orders of magnitude beyond anything reasonable in order for the prediction to be wrong.

The result is that if they don't call the race, someone else will, and they have a strong capitalist incentive to be among the first to accurately call the race.

Welch was the winner of this election the minute Leahy announced his retirement. anyone who thought VT would send a republican to Washington in this political climate needs their head examined

You understand they're entirely and wholly justified in doing this, though, right?

How so? Vermonters actually seem to pay attention to the candidate and not strictly the party. There is a reason it is one of the states that splits the ticket in governor and senator parties.

I'm not sure we really pay that much attention to the candidate, though. Look a little farther down the ballot and statewide positions were won by Democrats with shockingly similar margins. I think we're swayed by name recognition/incumbency first and party second. Policy positions are a distant third.

I say this as someone who seems to have voted for the winning candidates is every race this cycle, except for Governor.

Yeah but I would be surprised if I'm not the only one who didn't even know who Malloy was until his signs showed up everywhere Monday. Totally not surprised it was an early call.

I remember in 2016 Hillary was called like 5 minutes after the polls closed.
