My girls have a main room of 32 square feet with a vestibule of 16 sq ft. I have either a surface or perch running around the perimeter to give them room to roost. At most I had 16 birds in there that would pretty much only be in there to sleep. I open them up every morning to roam around my property. In the summer, when I can get the gate to stay closed because there's no snow, I close them off into an approx 20'x50 pen area.

Two+ player card based:
Let's Summon Demons (current favorite)
Exploding Kittens
Unlocked Games (like escape the room games but with cards.)

Two+ player board games:
Ticket to Ride
Pandemic
Patchwork
Scythe (prepare for a 2 hour+ game)
Everdale (a 3D board game. Quite possibly the prettiest board games I ever played)

Freecampsites.com (maybe .net) is a good resource. There’s lots of primitive campsites all over. Look for forest roads along route 100. These are the brown national forest signs with a 2 or 3 digit number. I have yet to find a map of all of them but I think it’s fun when I come across one I haven’t explored yet. There’s some nice ones around the Hancock/Granville areas. Miles of roads that usually have campsites at the end. Bingo Brook in Goshen/Rochester is cool.

What kind of bike you got? My wife and I like to explore the class 4s around us in the ripton/Goshen area all the time. We’d love to meet some other riders. I’m on a Himalayan and she’s got a KLX 230.

Won't be as much bitching as when they ripped up the whole town and installed 2 traffic lights. I worked retail in town when that was happening and the amount of people bitching about a fucking traffic light was astounding. The same people will complain about gubmint spending on "unnecessary things" while they get into their Ford F350 they use to get back and forth from their house on Union Street to Hannaford's.

I've been waived into traffic by someone "trying to be nice" so many times here. I've flat out refused and then it becomes a standoff of the "nice" person demanding I pull out when I can't see past their stupid SUV into oncoming traffic. I'd rather wait 15 minutes trying to turn left onto a road than have some fucking asshole stop traffic just so they can feel good about themselves.

I fucking put mine on when the temps were 55. It felt so dumb listening to the clack clack clack of the studs hitting the ice free pavement. Fuck this weather. I thought my depression was bad enough in the winter. Now its just grey and rainy and I can't do shit. Hiking trails are muddy, skiing is trash, skateparks are soaked. ugh

Highland calves are the cutest animals. I used to live down the street from a farm in Whiting that had a bunc of head of Highland cows and every springs was a treat to see so many little cows with emo haircuts prancing around.

Commuter line from Rutland to Burlington stopping at midd, vergennes, shelburne, and south Burlington along the way. Then Burlington east to Montpelier and barre. A line from Rutland to wrj would be nice and help me out. Could then connect it to the non existent commuter lines in the upper valley. This would go through killington and give people a better way to get to the resorts.

If you don’t have neither and can only afford one, go with micro spikes. I use the yaktrax diamond grips and they are perfect for most trails. I do Pico every winter and never need my snow shoes. But the year I did Abe in -10 I was the only person out after some fresh snow so the snow shoes were necessary.
I bring them for every hike but often times leave them in my car if I see the trail is packed down and crowded. If it’s questionable, I strap them to my pack with some bungee cords.
In my 10 years of hiking here I’ve used my snow shoes less than a dozen times. I’m not an avid hiker but I get out often enough. Plus I don’t know where you are but I’m on a mountain and have gotten like 6” cumulative so far this winter. All of it’s gone now.

Most popular trails are going to be so packed down that snowshoes become pointless unless you hit them right after snowfall. I use micro spikes for like 90% of my winter hiking. Lesser traveled trails and summits often need them, so find a way to comfortably strap them to your pack so you don't have to wear them all the time when you don't need them. Get collapsible poles too so you can store them when the trail is easy going.

Get snow shoes with spikes on the bottom and a heel lift if you plan on doing anything other than flat trails. Spikes help you grip and the heel lift makes inclines waaay easier.

There isn't much difference to your gait with snow shoes vs not. Your stance may be slightly wider, which always makes me feel the hike more in my hips than when hiking without. Practice in your yard before trying to climb Mansfield and get your stride down. It'll prob feel awkward at first but you should pick it up quickly.

I love winter hiking! It's so peaceful with snow dampening noises and lack of humans on the trails. I've had Mt Abe's summit all to myself with the bluest ski I had ever seen one day. Granted it was -10 at the top, but surprisingly not windy.

Enjoy and stay off the XC/backcountry ski tracks!

Echoing the sentiment in case anyone glossed over it: DO NOT walk in ski tracks. Nothing ruins a day on skis more than constantly tripping over some one's snow shoe tracks in the ski tracks. Most trails I have been on have 2 tracks: one for skis, one for snowshoes. Stick to your side and we can all live harmoniously.

Which is funny, I feel the opposite. I moved here from a congested suburb where I felt like a faceless drone. I moved here 10 years ago first to a town of 1000 and now to a town of 200. While I see plenty of drawbacks to living in a town this small, I definitely feel like a valued member of the community. It helps that I worked at a local hardware store where I got to know damn near everyone. That , coupled with getting involved in my local government and I feel like I have way more connections now. I also feel like making friends has some how been easier. I feel having such a smaller pool of people makes it easier to make a lasting connection. Like when I lived in the burbs, people who shared my ideals and interests were a dime a dozen. Not so much here. So when i meet some one, we become fast friends due to the shear lack of likeminded people.

Granted, I was in my mid 20s before and living mainly for myself and was hardly politically involved. I think age plays a good part, but the smaller, tight knit communities can't be ignored either.

Not invalidating your feelings at all, just sharing my own experience.

I've had this issue too. My computer kept trying to upload all my shit to One Drive which killed all speeds. I fixed that and things were fine for a bit but quickly started to downgrade. I've had some techs willing to do diagnostic shit. One even stayed on the line with me while I turned off and back on every device until we found the one that was the culprit. But that's another gripe I have with them: some techs are amazing, others just say "Huh, that sucks. Anyway, we're sending a tech out, but we can't tell you when and if they show up while you're not home, that's on you."

It's gotten to the point where I actively tell the person on the phone that I know a call ticket isn't going to fix anything, but I'm hoping to waste everyone's time and resources enough for CC to actually do something useful.

numetalbeatsjazz OP t1_ivtbl9x wrote

Yeah I'm restarting my router daily. I just wish CC would come out say that this is just what happens instead of gaslighting me and telling me that 1. things are fine or 2. we're send a tech out (to not do shit)

It's just weird that sometimes a tech will come and things will work fine for a few weeks. maybe it's just coincidence?

Anyway, it sounds like you're saying Starlink is good enough. Is it a connectivity issues? I've heard from a friend that it cuts out occasionally bc satellites not lining up. Is this your experience?

numetalbeatsjazz OP t1_ivq82lq wrote

I just switched from 10/1 to 25/2 like a month ago and it has been less consistent than my previous connection. One of the techs mentioned something along the lines of what you're saying. They keep saying they are sending a tech and they only come out maybe 25% of the time. What exactly should I be asking for? Sorry, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to technical stuff like that?
