happyonthehill802 t1_j3dk34e wrote

I mean thats kind of how life works right? Either you aquire skills through experience, schooling, or both. The trades seems to pay better than most industries, even for inexperienced workers. We had unskilled labor handing us tools all summer for 20/hr...compared the most other unskilled labor in my area at 15-18.

You know of any good unions in the state?

3

happyonthehill802 t1_j3cj8pq wrote

Edit: guess we do have unions. i subcontract. Investment in tools was minimal since i had most of them from building my first two houses.

If i were to do it again id go pull wire for an electrician and work on getting certified. Easy clean work, lowest investment as far as tooling goes.

Post office is hiring.

BuilderThat476 t1_j3dna8t wrote

Yep and depending on the position starting pay is around $20/hr (for clerks at least, usually less for mail handlers).

You start in a temporary position but they really do want to convert you to a regular position, so long as you're a good worker and make it past your 90 days you're in. Includes health benefits at the start, multiple yearly raises, and once you convert to a regular you get like a $4/hr raise and additional benefits as well as those yearly raises. Protected by a union and dues are minimal. Ability to transfer crafts if you don't like where you start out or get bored, and the ability to transfer states and locations if you ever want to move.

Heads up the hiring process is long and it may seem like they ignored your application for a while. I got lucky with starting my orientation about a month and a half after I originally applied but I've had other coworkers say it took like 3 months.

I had a friend who worked at Ben and Jerry’s (in the store)… they said they loved it and everyone who worked there was nice. The pay was great and they got a free pint often enough that they were sick of ice cream pretty quickly. This was pre covid and not in your department though, so I guess my comment is irrelevant. But you could always try it out!

If you can pass the background check, don't mind being fingerprinted, and can deal with the chaos + lack of vacations when a lot of your coworkers will have time off, every school district I know of is looking for maintenance/custodial work right now. I don't know the exact details of each district, and I assume they're all slightly different, but pay should start around $18-20 an hour, should be $1 raise a year. Shifts are usually 7 am to 3 pm, 3 pm to 10 pm.

If you're qualified for things like plumbing, electrician, etc. You won't have any issue finding work. Those are always in demand.

Unfortunately a lot of companies in Vermont are out of touch and pay way less than that. Because of our "low cost of living" its not low.

I would reccomend haggling pretty hard with employers on salary. And walk away from anyone that tries to justify low pay because of our cost of living.

Keep in mind workers are very much in demand in VT right now. And companies will pay higher if you give them a hard time.

7

yolosaurusrex69 t1_j3eg9xn wrote

Might take you a few years to get back to that, depending on what your experience and skill set is. Most skilled trade work around here starts around 20-25/hr as far as I’ve seen.

After taxes $20/hr is ~13/hr. Where the fuck are you going to live bringing home $26k a year? Bullshit.

If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation and cola, it would be $27/hr.

I was making more at age 12 in 1973 when the minimum wage was $2.75/hr than I was making at my last "good" job.

Yeah, Minimum wage should go back to $.25. That's what people get for not being born rich and adhering to prosperity gospel.

What the hell is wrong with you? Are you rich? Or a poor republican happy to lick your boss's boots for pennies? DO you not realize that the more money the working class has, the richer EVERYONE will be, including the richies? Do you remember the '50s?

Minimum wage was supposed to proved a dignified living, minimal, but dignified FOR ONE WORKING PERSON WITH A FAMILY; had it kept pace with COLA and inflation, it would be TWENTY-SEVEN DOLLARS AN HOUR, now. And the funny thing is, even THAT is marginal for a single-income household. Decent place to live, functional car, health care for a family? $27/hr doesn't cut it.

I was making more when I was 12 years old in 1973 when the minimum wage was $2.75, than I did at my last "good" job.

What’s the point of working a job for 40 hours a week if you can’t afford rent and food after it’s done?

Personally, I’d rather just go on welfare then be part of the working poor. Get more of my time back and still be poor.

I know you will hate this comment, but I don’t care about anybodys business if it won’t benefit me. Life is too short for that bullshit.

Also if anybody says “nobody wants to work” for why they are short staffed, if you raise pay, you will get people.

I have a great job now but if McDonald’s paid 150k. I’d quit my job tomorrow.
