Extremely common bug that I think was generally just called “a bad cold” or regarded as a generic respiratory infection until recent years. Not sure what the catalyst for public adoption of its real name (RSV) was— I’d guess the pandemic.

RSV is very common in newborn babies as well and is especially deadly to pre-mature babies.

Indeed. If there’s a bright spot to the pandemic, it’s at least that some folks are now cognizant of how dangerous even “routine” illnesses are.

Very common but mostly serious among young children so you’re not crazy. If you don’t have children or work with them it’s not crazy to not know. Adults do get it but we don’t really test for it so you’d just be sick with an upper respiratory thing for awhile.
