It has been going since 2014...

Russia just fucked up bad, and now people are putting down the foot. Russians need to see that this "special operation" has run into a wall a bit.

And now that wall ist growing spikes and a moat, and catapults on top. Every idiot needs to understand its about time to gtfo for RU - and the dying will stop from one day to the next.

It’s really not ending soon, is it? 😔

Up to Russia to end it.

This is just putting in law and budget that Germany is ready to stick it out with Ukraine. Putting money where their mouth is.

Europe is using Ukraine as a reason to remilitarize. It’s not just Germany. Poland is going all in on spending. The Nordic countries are setting up a joint air defense plan. Even Italy is ramping up its military.

After all these years, they realized that 1) it was not the ‘end of history’, 2) they can’t depend on the US for everything, and 3) Russia is going to keep at it. People overly focus on what the US is doing, but Europe is changing too.

Old stockpiled stuff perhaps — for the record, perfectly adequate for countering all modern Russian equipment —, but if Western nations decide to supply weapons fresh out of the factory there’s really no limit.

Yeah, it’s not even a contest. Russia’s GDP is approximately 2 trillion USD, the collective GDP of the countries that support Ukraine is approximately 52 trillion USD. Russia will run out of steam looong before the West does.

We'll see. It all depends on what all those dollars are spent doing.

You realise that all this money is going directly to the US to pay for their new military equipment while they offloads ‘100s of billions’ of old equipment that has been hyper evaluated?

klappstuhlgeneral OP t1_je4angh wrote

Yeah, let's see about that.

Some money will defo go to the arsenal of democracy - that's just a no brainer if idiots think they can keep escalating on their neighbor's place, and fix a shitty coup attempt with artillery on residential areas. Should surprise absolutely no one.

The other thing that this is going to do is to ramp up German arms production like you haven't seen in a long time. This step is the gov signing off on it. Nobody really wanted to do it, but Putin and parts of Russian society have clearly illustrated there is no way around it. Defense industry will go on a hiring spree.

Germany, France and others are selling gear too. In fact Germany is selling them AA systems, howitzers, and rheinmetall wants to sell them tanks

So not directly to the US

Majority of the US aid going to Ukranie is in weaponry, this AID then has to be paid off. The European aid besides a some weaponry is money, this money is then being sent to the US to pay off their aid.

Europe is paying the American military industrial complex to create and fabricate new weaponry for them to keep.

Troglert t1_je6b79s wrote

The aid is aid, it’s not being paid off as it is a gift. They are buying equipment with some money true, but that is mostly from the EU weapons fund. The US is also sending large amounts of money, they have for example paid for the salaries for Ukraines doctors and nurses for several months.

The only ones opposing this in Germany are the far left (old romantic socialists - and they are torn even) and the far right AfD (you know what is up with them).

The green party just is ahead of the curve on a lot of issues. That's why Putin and his minions can't stand them.

Are you sure you're parsing the situation right here?

Dead-in-the-head NATO (Macron) won't see any opposition from "officialist" (whatever that is) parties? Yeah, right - Schröder and Scholz, also known as the "Bloodhounds of the West".

While the US needs to be cajoled to send a couple of tanks? And there is 0 NATO involvement whatsoever (granted there is involvement from countries that ARE IN NATO - but that's kinda hard to avoid here, point in case).

With that cooperation in Iraq and Afg (esp the departure) it should be clear to everyone that everyone is just a US pawn here... /s

Your reading of the situation is about as accurate as Putin's here I think.

If you think the green party position "rhetoric" is "funny", maybe should try reading some first hand information on their thoughts and principles then?

If NATO would’ve gotten involved it really would’ve been a 3-day special military operation, just not how Russia pictured it.
