No video outright proving innocence and that the accuser was lying.

It was sinply cheaper to pay a few thousand dollars to the person that fight the lawsuit.

There was no financial benefit to winning. They gain nothing

It actually makes perfect sense when looking at things from a number crunching standpoint.

Once you realize the city gains absolutely nothing by crushing people in court for these lawsuits the strategy of just settling out of court makes perfect sense.

Most of the people that make these false claims and sue are penniless so its not like you can countersue.

No reason to litigate if you cit them a check. Thats how the city has handled the issue.

They have staff run the numbers and have come to the conclusion that litigation costs would be more than settlements and therefore they just settle.

How many WANT to pursue a trial? Or how many sue in general?

Either way i dont have numbers but i imagine its absurdly high.

Anecdotally ive seen lawsuits for outright lies get the person a few grand with little push back from the city even with mountains of video evidence.

Short term probably but not long term.

And frankly the current strategy of flooding the transit system with cops on ot is not sustainable long term as a “solution” to transit crime

They realized early on they fucked up by mis reading but its waaaaaaaay too late to back down on an argument they have been foolishly making for years most likely. Now they are just gonna double and triple down or ignore replies

It absolutely has in fact that was the main argument used for the last arbitration hearings

Combined with the fact that nypd pays way less than all the neighboring departments.

No it was the result of negotiations with the city.

The city wanted low starting salaries in exchange for any raises.

The pba wasnt out here protesting for 42k salaries

36k is everyone under nypd payroll from chiefs to cleaners

Also school safety and traffic agents

Basically its an inaccurate representation of staffing numbers.

If we are talking straight up just patrol cops maybe a few thousand

Not a single cop reform person has EVER argued for an increase in workplace QoL for law enforcement and that union is the only thing stopping the city from going nuts with labor law violations

I would assume it still counts towards the budget as that has been the only consistent long term overtime since october.

At the rate they have been ordering the transit overtime i doubt the allotted funds could cover it all for this long

Most of the hate crime hoaxes dont have white “victims”

We had smollett who is black

That muslim girl who claimed she got junped by trump fanatics for wearing a hijab on a crowded nyc train… and then admitted she made that up to get away with breaking curfew.

Etc.

Although i do find the idea of a white grandpa writing “black people rule” on his shit and trying to claim a hate crime hysterical

Depending on the value of the bike it would be considered a major crime and would have to be reported and investigated at the scene. Not the type of thing that can just be banged out on the fly at a precinct in a few minutes. The delayed reporting also makes things more tedious.
