During a 5am run a few summers ago, I was running through India Point Park and it was nearly pitch dark in some areas. Pretty sure I surprised someone who was giving a bj to someone sitting on a park bench.

Fane locked it and the adjacent parcel down just as things were starting to happen in the area. Since then, many things have been built and this parcel just sits there. Partially because of the fight about it, but also because it's not affordable. I predict we'll see Fane asking for another $25M from the state to help get it started. And costs will be cut in construction. It never was and still isn't feasible. If Fane had never proposed something so ludricrous, those two parcels would already be built out and we'd have some nice amenities for the park.

Like people say, there is a lot of parking. There are some sorta legal spaces pretty close to DASH, so just take one if you're there. I've never had to park more than a half block away while dropping off or picking up.

It's a very safe neighborhood, for the most part. Just as in all cities, don't leave bookbags or other things laying around and easy to grab. Your rack will be fine. Sounds like you'll be taking your bike to the shop, so why worry?

Wow, these comments, based on who knows what supposition. If you're asking about "the Valley" then you're probably talking about the area around Valley Street between Dean St/Pleasant Valley Pkwy and Atwells. Beyond that, it's Olneyville. The converted mills in that area are pretty popular and there isn't much crime.

If you mean the "Valley" neighborhood as defined by the city as one of its 25 neighborhoods, then you can probably find crime statistics for the neighborhood. It doesn't seem like there are any commenters from the neighborhood on this thread.

They did away with a 10 cent toll on a bridge to Aquidneck Island years ago, thanks to political pressure. So the daily users of that bridge (I think it was Mount Hope) spread the maintenance cost of the bridge to the rest of the state, including many people who will never, ever cross that bridge in a car. It's ridiculous that we don't toll the people actually using the roads, while the many (mostly urban dwelling) taxpayers who don't drive are forced to pay for them through taxes.

Seems like an odd take. Gentrification is a complex outcome. It started with mafia control over the area, where they didn't allow non-whites to move across Cranston Street. That's what kept the neighborhoods segregated at first. Later, preservationists and DIYers who wanted a project fixed up housing that was largely abandoned or burned out. WBNA was organized by old timers (yes, all white probably) trying to keep their neighborhood from literally burning down. Real estate values then did their thing. Whether you like what WBNA is doing now doesn't mean they are to blame for everything that has happened in the last 50 years.

Another consideration is health care. What do you do if you get sick? It's very expensive even if you don't have to go to the hospital or ER. Over the counter medicine can be a lot. Also, as a foreigner, you can be taken advantage of because you will be sponsored. So if you don't do what they say, what will happen? Be careful and check references from others who have worked there in the same situation.

I have a single gay friend about your age who lives on Arnold St in Fox Point. He walks home from the downtown bars quite often, using the pedestrian bridge. I would say that the Atwells Ave part of Federal Hill has had more issues, because of a few bars there. Those issues may have been solved. It's a lot gayer as you go towards Broadway and towards the Armory neighborhood. The distance to your job is still walkable from west of I-95, but it's not as convenient as downtown or Fox Point would be.
