The same thing teasers and trailers do to movies. Thing is, some of them are better than others, just as some authors are better than others. Some prefaces ... aren't well inspired.

Some very good mega series: Star Wars and Warhammer 40k. For Wh40k, start with the Horus Heresy.

The galaxy's ruling race have died out, and their vassals (humans included) do battle to establish higherarchy. It uses wormhole travel, not warp or hyperspace like other series.

You are reading an old(er) version of the language, that's why it sounds bad.
But the ideas are great. You just have to go through the language.
Try Silmarillion. It's about the making of the old world and the fight against the first Dark Lord, Sauron's master. The storyline is even better ... and the language even older-fashioned.
