I heard back from 902, and it sounds like they genuinely stumbled into this dilemma through ignorance. To paraphrase: and old friend who hosted other sports-related events at the brewery (Coach Hurley) asked to host this event. They said ok, without knowing anything about the People's Park Foundation, Paul Fireman, the Liberty State Park turmoil ... until this blew up this morning. Now they feel obliged to go through with it. Beside the beer they sell, there's no money in it for them. I'm buying their story. 902 always struck me as a good, community-minded business. They screwed up. It happens.

I just sent an email to 902 expressing my deep disappointment and requesting a response. If I get one, I'll post it. In the meantime, if I'm able, I'll go to tonight's shindig and grouse and bitch. Next step, boycott 902.

Welcome to the neighborhood. I've lived on the same block for 20+ years, a bit farther west towards Chestnut. You will notice the train noise, at first. After a short time, you'll be oblivious to it. I never notice the horn blowing. To be honest, it's not an issue. Those douchebags with the fart cars on Newark will be way more noticeable. Feel free to private message me if you need any information on the neighborhood.

Palisades Park for fantastic Korean. Fort Lee for Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Newark's Ironbound for Portuguese, Brazilian and, increasingly, Central American -- though not exactly vegetarian-friendly fare, there are some decent seafood-centric spots. Staten Island -- not Jersey, but close enough -- has a concentration of Sri Lankan restaurants.

Have you ever noticed that when you are on Warren Street looking toward the Statue of Liberty from, say, Montgomery Street, the statue looks large and close, and as you walk toward the statue, it almost seems to get smaller and recede? It's an illusion, of course. Much like how the moon or sun appears larger and closer when on the horizon. Try it sometime.

Consider the Hilltop/Island sections just southeast of the Journal Square PATH station. It's a short walk to Downtown and public transportation; it's quiet, safe and way cheaper than Downtown. My wife and I have lived in The Hilltop for 20+ years, without issue. It's mostly multi-family homes, but there's a smattering of smaller apartment buildings. Good luck.

Hah. Good tenants are worth their weight in gold; bad tenants are a leaky bag of shit. This is a much more expensive solution, but what about a heat pump to augment your hot water system. It'll take care of your air conditioning needs too, and you'll probably snag some sort of tax rebate.

I second this opinion on The Hilltop -- we moved here 20 years ago from Paulus Hook. It's cheaper, quieter and way less floody than downtown -- stay away from garden-level apartments downtown and the lower-lying areas of Paulus Hook.

My wife is Japanese and a big hit with her friends is tote bags from The Strand bookstore, Trader Joe's, etc. They don't really differentiate Jersey City from New York City, so anything NYC-related is considered a hometown gift. As much as I love Second Street's and Antique Bakery's stuffed breads, if they make it through customs -- and that's a big "if" -- they'll be stale and worst for the wear after that 12-hour flight. Enjoy the trip, Japan is another -- better -- world.

Without doing much online searching at all, I found a bunch of scathing reviews from former tenants. I'd recommend doing lots of research before you pull the trigger.
