1968, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson was divorced from his first wife, Carol Freedman, and living the high life in a large house on Sunset Boulevard outside Los Angeles.
That spring, he stopped to pick up two female hitchhikers on the Sunset Strip and invited them home for milk and cookies. After eating, he got to talking about his experiences with the Maharishi, founder of Transcendental Meditation. The women said that they, too, had a spiritual guru, named Charlie.
Not long afterward, Wilson returned home at night to find the lights on and a school bus parked outside. He eyed the small man walking toward him and asked if the intruder intended to hurt him.
"Do I look like I'm going to?" responded Charles Manson, before dropping to his knees to kiss Wilson's feet.
Thus began the unusual friendship between a rock 'n' roll icon and one of history's most sadistic cult leaders.

Reply to TIL about the Javan Rhinoceros. A critically endangered species of rhino. Currently there are about 76 Javan rhinos surviving in just one country, Indonesia. by MightGuy420x
The decline of Javan rhinos is attributed to poaching, primarily for their horns, which are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine, fetching as much as US$30,000 per kg on the black market. As European presence in their range increased, trophy hunting also became a serious threat. Loss of habitat, especially as the result of wars, such as the Vietnam War, in Southeast Asia, has also contributed to the species' decline and hindered recovery.

The song peaked at number eight in the United States for three weeks, reached number six in the United Kingdom (where it was certified Silver for sales of over 250,000 copies), number five in Canada, and number three in Australia.
The Trojan Marching Band's contributions set a record for the highest number of musicians performing on a single. At the time, the marching band had 112 members.

Chuvalo is best known for his two fights against Muhammad Ali. He went the distance both times, in each case losing the decision by a wide margin on the scorecards. The first fight, on March 29, 1966, at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens, was for Ali's world heavyweight title. "He's the toughest guy I ever fought", said Ali of Chuvalo after the fight.

Reply to TIL about Rip. A ww2 search and rescue dog who was awarded the Dickin Medal for bravery in 1945. He was found in Poplar, London, in 1940 by an Air Raid warden, and became the service's first search and rescue dog. He is credited with saving the lives of over 100 people. by MightGuy420x
A stray mixed-breed terrier, Rip was found wandering about after a bombing raid in Poplar, London, England, United Kingdom by an air raid warden named Mr. E. King. King soon adopted the dog and he became the mascot of the Southill Street Air Raid Patrol. Despite having no training, Rip had a talent for locating people trapped in bomb damaged buildings. He would sniff and scratch for signs of life before barking to attract attention.
Such was his skill that Rip became the ARP Service's first official search and rescue dog. In 12 months during 1940-41 it is reckoned that he rescued over 100 Blitz victims in London. His success was partially responsible for prompting the training of many more search and rescue dogs by the end of the war. Rip was awarded the PDSA Dickin medal in July 1945, which is the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. His citation read: "For locating many air raid victims during the Blitz of 1940."
Rip wore his Medal on his collar until the day he died in 1946. He is buried at PDSA's Animal Cemetery in Ilford, Essex, England. Rip's headstone reads: "We also serve - for the dog whose body lies here played his part in the Battle of Britain". His medal was sold at auction in London on 23 April 2009 fetching a record price for a Dickin Medal of £24,250.
