I just left providence after living there for the past 20 something years. Commuting to Groton from Providence is doable, just be aware that it will be about an hour each way. The way there won’t be bad, but if your boyfriend will be commuting back into providence at rush hour (4-6pm times), the commute back will be longer. There will be traffic on 95 north starting in Warwick/Cranston. It’s not crazy like DC or Boston, but will add to the commute.

The west end of providence is younger. More your age range. Pretty progressive. Lots of restaurants on atwells, lots of cafes, bars, and recently breweries popping up. I lived in the federal hill area of the west end. Federal hill is the area on west end I would recommend. There is a climbing spot, where I would describe it as the “border” of west end and South side. I think it’s Rice Street. The west end area is also close to routes 95, 195, 10, and 6. East side is more money, however, is more green, has more parks, and I would say (opinion) better for running. Check out blackstone Blvd.

The west end area is gentrifying and prices are rising. There is limited housing. So start looking for places asap.

I noticed someone mention Westerly. Great little beach town with an Amtrak stop downtown. An older and more established crowd. Not sure of any climbing gyms.

I've lived in and around Providence most my adult life. I even recall going to the Arcade often with my mother, who used to work downtown. I recall going to a bakery, an Asian spice/herb/tea store, and a game store in late 80s/early 90s. There were a bunch of shops, not only on the first floor, but the two upper levels as well. It was eventually shut down, tenants kicked out, and rehabbed. After the rehab a few cool spots opened, some restaurants, and a bike shop. They added the microlofts to the upper floors. But it just doesn't have the same splendor or appeal it had before the latest rehab. The feel of a shopping center/mall is gone. There isn't the foot traffic it once had. However, the microlofts is a great alternative use. Would rather see something happen than having something historical sit empty or torn down.

It’s a bit early to say when the ferry will start operating and the daily frequency. Here is the info from last season: link.. There are also RIPTA bus routes that run from providence to Newport all year with better frequency in case the ferry is not operating or the times don’t work for you. It’s about an hour from providence to Newport on a RIPTA bus.

So many different options and challenging to give my own perspective without knowing your preferences. Do you prefer suburban style development or more urban. If urban, how urban? Do you have cars? What is your price range? Answers to these questions will help for a more informed response. I also suggest taking some time to come down and explore the area. You are very close and have time.

Renovating and bringing these schools up to standards of today will likely cost just as much as building a new, state of the art school. Also, developers love converting old schools into condos/apartments. Bothe high schools are in desirable locations to do just that. Hopefully with affordability in mind.
