Not that I agree with prohibition, but part of the reason it happened in the States is due to domestic violence.

That's fair.
My thinking is along the lines of funding for such projects, past promises by governments as well as private sector (looking at you Elon), and any upcoming recessions that would also affect any progress.

Weren't we supposed to be colonizing mars in 12 years? 12 years after 1970 I should mention.

That's basically the intention of the wnd level of our 2 level beginners graduation system.

There are 2 levels of learners permit in Ontario.
G1 is as stated above, you basically learn to operate the vehicle in traffic and on roads with a posted speed limit of 80 km/h. You also have to have a licensed driver with you at all times.
You then graduate to a G2 where you can drive on freeways and after dark. As far as I remember, any traffic violations knock you down to G1.

Where I live, the beginners license specifically forbids driving on the freeway and after dark.

Are Americans truly trying to go back to the 1800s?

Something I hear often when showing a new turbo kit or something similar that I designed and fabricated on a car.
Nope, not luck. 20 years of learning and experience.

Contrary to what many say, automation is stupid expensive and ridiculously complex. People are still needed to service these machines, maintain them and make sure they're actually doing their job. It may replace the quantity of workers needed to do the job, but the quality of worker required to keep these thing running goes way up.

The fear of automation and machinery is nothing new. The first fire engine in one of the US eastern cities was destroyed by the fire brigade because they didn't want their jobs replaced by a machine.
Similar thing happened in many factories during the industrial revolution.
