Like most sausage making, it’s complicated, but the point of congestion pricing is to fund the MTA first and reduce traffic second. Less cars good. More butts on transit good. I think we all get that. The part that irritates is that the transit alternatives on the Jersey side, namely NJ Transit and Path and the various ferry concerns bear the brunt of it. Transit ain’t cheap and it operates at a big fiscal cost to taxpayers. Both those systems were bursting at the seams pre pandemic and this will be a new burden to bear. None of the congestion money goes to offset that burden and that’s a dick move that doesn’t get enough attention

They’re ridiculous and if one fell over it could be the bridge all by itself. It comes down to the fact that almost all the cost and effort is in the machinery, so is it worth it to hold a project up over 10’ of tower? Probably not. It’s like asking if you’re going through all the effort to buy a truck to drive to work 10 times a year, does 15 miles matter more than 10? Not really because all the cost is in buying the truck.

The Belleville turnpike bridge is much lower at about 15’ when closed and ducks under route 21, so it can’t be raised for a fixed conversion, so even for the lightest river traffic, it must lift. The Route 3 bridge up the river was raised and converted to a fixed bridge with double the clearance so river traffic can go under it. All these decisions cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. They are not made lightly and the Army Corps and Coast Guard are the real deciding factors, not the DOT

First, diversity in New Jersey typically comes in two flavors; economic or ethnic. Rarely both. You may find people of different ethnic backgrounds in both those towns, but most of them ain’t hurting, financially.

Second, Montclair and South Orange are on different rail lines so you should check the train schedules to make it works for your own schedule. South Orange is only a few stops from the city or Hoboken. Montclair has (I think) 7 stops just in town and the ride can be quick or interminable, depending on the train you catch. If you’re going to the financial district, and depending on your income level, I assume you’ll head for Hoboken over Penn Station and take either the expensive but very fast ferry, or the cheaper but longer/sardine packed PATH.

Sorry for the salty discourse. Just a grumpy old bastid.

I will add to this that the New Jersey counties and the state has a fantastic CASA organization that is very on top of kids that get caught in the system and keep them out of abusive situations. I highly recommend anyone to volunteer fir the organization

Christie went nuts on a slash and burn binge through the state and he got strung up for running the government into the dirt. NJDOT and NJ Transit still haven’t fully recovered and they may never be what they once were. Lesson learned; if you want cheaper taxes, move.
