From Hamden, prospective route(s) and time(s) vary based on potential starting point. To drive to Waterbury, traveling via New Haven is an unusual option (e.g., never from northern Hamden where back roads to Rt 8 or travel via Cheshire to I-84 may be alternatives; Centerville or Spring Glen neighborhoods via Rt 15 to Woodbridge to Seymour via Rt 8 to Waterbury; maybe only travel via New Haven if near Hamden/New Haven border).

This ^ OP, plus New Haven and ‘burbs have more housing variety than Durham/Triangle, and it’s very accessible to the City, Boston, outdoor activities in/near New Haven, the rest of CT, New England, and also upstate NY. If you’re a Dukie, not much love exists for Duke in CT.

Under prior ownership, the Contois Tavern existed and potentially was a speakeasy before the Contois family bought or reestablished the business in 1934.

Side topic tangent: Prohibition started in 1920 and ended in 1933. During the prohibition years, annual New Haven City Directories document my Irish immigrant family’s saloon operated as a purported “candy or confectionery store”.

Likely similar to Contois’ predecessor, our candy store never stopped operating. Alcohol regulators and police and city leaders of the day were absolutely paid off. Written family records also indicate many of them joined our relatives for complimentary dinners after Sunday church services. Supposed to have served good eats, and definitely cashed Winchester Repeating Arms and other factory workers’ pay checks.

Still there, multiple ownership changes later (520 Winchester Ave/Thompson St). Hope the OP finds some quality day time establishments, but suspect the currently-named Taurus B may not meet OP’s interests. /s

Some people went to games in good seasons, but the NHL, media, and Madison Avenue know, then and now, most of the state’s strongest hockey towns never really supported the Whalers (Fairfield and New Haven counties), some state corporations in Hartford county which once upon a time supported the Whalers subsequently shrunk in-state operations and/or moved HQs elsewhere, financial obstacles exist to build a competitive 21st century arena let alone even bring the outdated, architecturally-challenged up to snuff, etc.

Reading the OP’s linked New Haven Register article, the plans for the development also include a new grocery store, day care center, etc. More housing with additional services in the lower Dixwell neighborhood appears positive.
