Brit here. I'm sure most of my compatriots will agree that it's still quite a strong insult/profanity in the UK - but it needs to be spat out angrily, as in these fine examples from Sean Bean.

Very possibly. Back in the 70s it used to be in Leeds, just off City Square - a huge building, now a hotel. I remember it well, it was before they bought Midland Bank and they still went by the full name "Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Corporation".
