Yes Civ of course! Civ4 was one of my favorite games growing up. Strategy games are uniquely situated to capture the underlying structural processes and relations. I’d say Paradox games are best at this (confirmed by historian Bred Devereaux”).

I played some of the first ACs and remember being baffled by how EA manages to market it as historically accurate year after year 😁

Ah yes, I learned so much from AoE2! Unfortunately the game mechanics are not very good at teaching how stuff worked…

I am not all that worried about factual nitpicks, more about the narratives present in “mainstream” stories/games for kids. In a film about knights, I’ll likely oscillate between “swoosh swoosh, take that villain!” and a lecture on feudalism being a brute and exploitative system romanticized by Victorians and that movie right here. But it’s true there is more nuanced kid content out there (suggested here), so I think it’s possible to give then a more balanced overview.

Ohh I had a few HH books when I was young and loved them too! They taught me life in history mostly suuucked. I did not know about the tv show though, I’ll definitely revisit them👍
