If you're willing to live in Upstate and Western NY, it's incredibly affordable to live there. Downstate is expensive, but it is for good (and some bad) reasons.

Something tells me, that person you replied to would rather have a dying town of the 'right' people versus a growing vibrant town/city of the 'wrong' people.

Reply to Maine residents - what do you find positive and negative about your state's low population density? by LockedOutOfElfland
Negative - limited diversity, limited business hours for most things, limited/no public/quasi public transit, having to go out of state for anything major, limited/no options for various services.
Positive - fresh air, quiet nights

Yes, Maine is not much different than the rest of the country in that regard.
I would say is that in small towns, the center of wealth mass is felt in the entire town, even when there is wealth stratification within the town. Take for example, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Sanford. Thse are three towns that border each other in Southern Maine (York County). In terms of wealth, Kennebunkport is the richest, Kennebunk is second, and Sanford is third. But within each town, you can tell where the rich families live and where those of more modest means live. For example in Kennebunk, the wealthiest tend to be within view of thr water and by extension closest to Kennebunkport where as the more modest income families live further inland near Sanford.

- keep a space blanket, small shovel, and scraper in your car. Id probably keep a spare jacket and maybe even a change of clothes in there to if you have the space.
- if you work indoors, go outside for lunch or your break. Doesn't need to be long, but vitamin d deficiency is real so try to get as much sunlight as possible.
- find an indoor and outdoor activity (or better yet, activities) that you enjoy. Tubing, skiing, walking your dog, etc just something to get you to go outside daily. Supplement that with an indoor activity, like the gym or a bowling league.
- when in doubt, stay inside or home.
- check your tires, do the penny trick or some other measurement that works and replace them if they fail. Assuming you're not a deep woods off road trekker, then regular all seasons would probably work for you.
- if your house quickly loses snow on the roof after a storm, your probably have poor insulation in the attic. Look into it and get it fixed to save money on heating.
- if you get a generator thats gas powered. Do not run it in a closed space. Also if someone gives you a double male ended plug, don't use that shit. You'll probably kill yourself or the power company technician.

I looked at the report underpinning this chart. The authors say that and warn against doing comparison charts like this.
So one big check I did was against the child fatality rate. It showed Florida and Mississippi children were much more likely to be killed as a result of child abuse. So either those states abusers are way less numerous or way more fatal OR rates of abuse are underdocumented in those states.

AB5 was a disaster and the only reason it didn't get more attention was because COVID hit.
