We would like to not completely depend on tourismm but the airbnbs aren't helping. Like 90% of the software company I work for moved out of vt due to lack of housing. We are a remote shop now. That is like 100 people that could contribute to the economy gone. Airbnbs swallowing up our housing is not helping this.

Cool. Might not be a smart investment to hedge all your bets on a legally dubious app that has become the target of legislators worldwide

Short term rentals are also toxic. They take away housing from people that work in the tourism industry. And funnel money out of state

Im gonna buy up all the property around your lot and create an open pit talc mine that operates 24/7. We should be able to do whatever we want with our property. Why is it a problem
Twombls t1_jdfdlqz wrote
Sadly. In places like vt that are tourist heavy its not a bust.
Legislation is our best move out of it

I mean more likely than not you would still be working a 5 day work week if you work at an out of state company. When you are full time salary there isn't really an enforcement for how many days you work.

I agree, but this is something that should be done on the national scale. Otherwise like the ruling probably wouldn't effect much.

True but unfortunately Vermont leaders are still stuck in the old school view of "they are here out of the kindness of their hearts. They don't need us we need them they will just leave if we tax them fairly"
Obviously this isn't true for the tourism industry. But unfortunately a lot of Vermont tends to be nieave in that way.

Vermont loves growing our tourism industry to infinite levels and pushing out locals. They want the state to be one giant luxury resort

I mean Vermonters unfortunately are raised to feel the need to "roll out the red carpet" for these things. Even being raised by pretty left wing parents. The opinion was always. "This wouldn't be good anywhere else, but this is vermont we NEED the jobs/ money / economy". That sentiment unfortunately is deep rooted in many people here. "We need jobs at all cost just build whatever and sign whatever deal we can we need this". This is how we ended up with the pits. And the jay scam.

Uhh do you own a multi million dollar property or something? Thats like. Not something most people in vt are paying
If you are actually paying that. You are very wealthy. And imo should probably be paying even more than that.

Yeah as a vermonter I agree. We need to grow our housing stock and increase industry beyond just tourism. But I dont really think we need to grow infinitely. I am fine being a small state.

You can't build your way out of an investor frenzy though
You need to ban airbnbs AND build

They did until covid hit.
Post covid no one who works at a grocery store as a bagger can afford to live in this state.

Probably doing some cutting along the lines. Encouraging people to get a good propane generator or battery bank.

This has been a problem as long as I've lived here. We could bury the lines. However its incredibly expensive. And the people who get hit the worst tend to live way out up a mountainside or something so their lines would never get buried anyway.

The town of shelburne and stowe did bury cables within a lot of their town center. It was expensive af.

I mean its a good idea. Our tiny rural state just cant afford it. Also if we did bury them I doubt the people that are effected the most would get their lines buried as they are usually like the last house in bumfuck nowhere up a single line.

That's why as a state we need to move towards industry thats not tourism. Tourism pays like shit.
