God I hope the new mayor fires the top three levels of management at the streets dept including the spokesperson who said there have been. “significant budget investments” in cleaning up neighborhoods. I’m not defending glitter but is there anything more emblematic of the rat shit attitude in the city government here than the streets “need to see a pilot for that” department

I think everyone on both the political and administrative side of things here has an extremely apologetic attitude towards things like blocking sidewalks, intersections, etc..

I had 36 email chain with my council person who brought in someone senior at the streets department (maybe head engineer?) about this on my block. The dude even came to see it and said “I gave them a hard time and told them not to block the sidewalk anymore”. Reader, you will be shocked to learn that nothing changed.

Yea that makes sense. I talked to Anvil and they definitely can do it. I was just trying to think of some DIY solutions but because I didn't know what to call it, I wasn't finding a lot. Even searching this sub for "breezeway" didn't really turn up anything. Most of the searches for "alley" referred to an actual alley between two rows of rowhomes on different blocks.

What do you call this space between two row homes? Is it an alley? Breezeway? I ask because I'm trying to figure out how to put a gate here and am not finding a lot with my googling. Incidentally, the bike in this pic is no longer there as someone came by, clipped the cable, and walked away with it. It's kind of my fault for not securing it better - I used a u-lock to lock the cable rather than using it to lock the bike to itself AND to the cable, but live and learn etc..

It’s like socialism for the admin sector of health care, both at hospitals like Penn but also insurance companies, pharma, etc. I don’t have the figures to hand but the size of the admin sector at most medical centers has grown tremendously compared to clinicians of any level.

The thing the article leaves out is how much money the hospitals save by having these workers because the cost of residency is payed for out of Medicare. UPenn covers a small percentage of what it costs to pay residents while getting 80 hours/week of free doctor labor.

Of the 200 murders this year, most of those people knew each other. I’d be willing to bet the number of random killings is fewer than the number of people killed by car violence.

What can be done with a place like that? I’m asking in earnest, what has been done with similar places? Do they just do a Chernobyl and seal it off to people?

I’d say it stayed exactly on the course he wanted it to be on. It didn’t “veer” anywhere. This kind of both-sideism language is framing it as some kind of mistake or something rather than saying “fascist candidate: not popular”

Maybe I was harsh. I’d settle for the top two levels. I’m sure there are lots of hard working people in the ranks who want to help things improve, I didn’t mean to slate them. Also the electeds deserve as much if not more derision
