an expensive surf and turf is great but in general that kind of steak house, they often have super boring food. side veg, side potato.
also really the worst if you don't eat meat or drink liquor

Yale used to or still does have a big listing of rental properties that's secret and not available to outsiders.
I'd use that first. MIL's friend got us the password back in 2005, got hooked up renting a tiny house in the woods 15 from Yale. Rented from a nice retired couple of Yale professors, no management company

Yeah, for renters Bridgeport is probably more affordable and Bridgeport station easier to bike to, a lot of wide streets and abandoned factories with little traffic in the area to get there. take your bike up in the elevator
and Milford train station, which is really small and charming would probably suck for biking to. close to Post Road, narrow streets and a lot of cars, unless you lived right by the green which sounds expensive

i've never used it but there's a Shoreline East train to Metro North. it's not expensive compared to gas and parking. it goes all the way to New London.
Rent isn't going to be great along the shoreline but it could expand OP's range a bit

Rudy's if you want Belgian frites in a bar with groovy dipping sauces.
Union League Cafe if you want French fries in a legit French Restaurant. They have fries but maybe also try the duck fat fingerling potato.

Yeah, you drove past the nice part of the campus, and half a block past you're in an edgy neighborhood that used be bad but now it's just depressing.
The nice part is, as you say, kinda hidden behind behind buildings, in courtyards and concealed within a web of one way side streets designed to get you back to the highway. The stadiums and fields are like 2 miles away basically in another town
New Haven is pretty unhip and a lot of the campus architecture is either medieval and forboding, or like the art museum, designed by Louis Kahn and has no visible entrance and little signage and is easy to miss. If you're driving there's a right turn down a narrow street off the main drag that gets you into the interior of the campus
You're pretty brave to use the bathroom at Popeye's though.

Dew Drop Inn sounds pretty good though... similar to what I liked about TK's- the small crunchy wings. TK's was always packed, no way they sold that business unless forced. They must have been doing like 2 million a year in sales

+1 for TK's. TK's had the best wings in New Haven until the city opened a school across from them and effed their zoning

Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill is open. It has a easy short walking trail and some dinosaur exhibits, good for maybe 2 hours, educational and 80s retro vibe to the place. Easy 30ish minute drive up 91
