Reply to AI will not replace software developers, It will just drastically reduce the number of them. by masterile
Demand for farmers has a natural limit proportional to population/food demand. Whereas there is no shortage of software development demand. From my (anecdotal) experience in engineering, we haven't even scratched the surface of problems that can be solved by software.
An increase in productivity will increase the avenues for profitable software development before decreases the job count.

Reply to Are we doomed through AI or will it generate new opportunities (an optimists viewpoint) by jcurie
I'm optimistic. GPT will only get better and it's already helping myself and others increase productivity.
I'm only optimistic for myself though. People who fall behind on this paradigm shift are gonna be fucked.

Environmental or civil are great options if you want to profit off of climate change without being one of the bad guys

Its fascinating and fun and you don't have to be stuck in an office all the time.
I'm in a similar field as your parents but if I ever go back for a masters degree I'll probably do something gis related

Big agree, i just started my first FT job in environmental/geotech and my programming skill is quickly making me a very valuable asset to the company.
