Not everybody have to be with everybody at all outings.

Call him(?) on it next time, right when he makes the comment. It's very hard to change this kind of behavior, so in case you need to hear this- that person is not your responsibility.

Sony MDR ZX 110NA might be what you are looking for.

Does it have to be wired? I had the belief, for a very long time, cheap Bluetooth headphones didn't get yet to decent sound level, and my JBL Tune500BT proved me wrong (about 35 GBP on Amazon). They are not NC but suprised me in terms of sound quality .
