I couldn’t finish the second Earthseed book, the bleakness was killing me.
If you liked those two then I highly recommend the Broken Earth trilogy and Oryx and Crake.

Reply to Do you give books to people? by BwanaAzungu
I do, and I actually have a really good hit rate with them, what's weird is that no one ever tells me about it.
For instance, I have a few friends who all live in the same house, so I sent them a copy of Good Omens, and got radio silence. A few years later I sent American Gods, radio silence. I gave it one more shot with the first Bobiverse book, and heard nothing.
I finally asked one afternoon, and it turned out that everyone in the house had read all the books and talked about them incessantly while reading them, but I was just never there for the conversations.
Needless to say, this is not a crowd that is long on sending "thank you" cards...

As a Fallout fan I'm good with stories from a vault, this one just has that "must find out what happens next" thing going in spades.
Early on I was thinking, "this is silly, I know what's going to happen," and of course... I was wrong.

It was 9 books, and none of the baroque cycle, I did a write-up about it here:

tldr: would read again. Lots of it, anyway.

Shift is a prequel about how things got set up. I'm only 1/4 of the way through it, but am really liking it.

It isn’t rocket science, but I just spent an entire year reading Neal Stephenson, so a page-turner was very welcome.

This is why we pay for heat for our tenants — getting smacked with huge oil bills really messed with me when I was renting, especially in December when Christmas also comes along.
A landlord can write it off on their taxes, as well.

I had no idea about the existence of HavenHotChicken or House of Naan until this thread.
Fries, mozz, tikka masala sauce and some tandoori chicken on top?
it’s weird, because I feel like I’ve dipped french fries into everything possible (good restaurant blue cheese being the best), but I’ve just never had fries and tikka masala available at the same time.

I moved away from New Haven 16 years ago, and both am a foodie and am married to a foodie, and Southern Wings is probably on the top 5 restaurants I miss most, possibly even top 3.

For me, the Caribbean jerk from Southern Wings Express in West Haven is the best flavor around.

I went for a massage last week (because someone gave me a gift certificate), and halfway through the masseuse asked me if I’d had another massage recently because I wasn’t carrying any tension.
It was the ultimate example of how I’ve come to a place in my life where I’m at peace with my issues and that I’ve built the Life I Want To Live.
I have ADD (no hyperactivity) and was chronically depressed for most of my life. I’m 51 now and while that number is scary, after spending most of my life dreading getting older I’ve finally realized that getting old is awesome as long as you’re constantly working to improve your situation.
As a college student I would get crippling tension in my back, to the point that I could neither sit up nor sleep, from fear of failure during exams. 30 years later I would still have nightmares from it. There were times I’ve had to dig my diploma out of the basement to remind myself that I finally got there — it took me 9 years, but I got my bachelors degree.
Just keep at it, no matter how bad shit gets, and keep pushing forward. Visualize what you want your life to be like and keep the effort up and Getting Old can mean Getting Better.

William and Lyon streets are honestly the best-kept secret in New Haven. They’re an often forgotten part of Wooster Square.
Lower rents, same walkability, plus a community garden.

Dwight had a bad reputation for a long time, it always makes me happy to see people recommend it now.
I will never understand why Morris Cove remains such a “secret.”

When we moved to New Haven in 2002 we had a party and I picked up *unsliced* pies from Bar, Modern and Pepes.
We then ripped the lids off the boxes and mixed them up so no one could tell which pie was which, and did a blind taste test.
Obviously it all depends on the tastes of the individuals at the party, but it came out:
- Modern
- Bar
- Pepes
I'm also still partial to Zuppardis, am still mourning Spooners, and Yorkside is our goto when we're in the mood for Greek pie. Also, Bar often wins out because they have the best salad and I love the mashed potato pie.

This is why i read on an ipad -- when I finish a book i can jump into the bookstore and instantly grab something new. I usually start researching what I want to read next a week or so before i complete a book, and often have it sitting there, ready to roll.
I've also been known to just start the book or trilogy over again. Broken Earth was like that for me.
