Reply to ELI5 Why do doctors wait for cancer to progress to a further stage before prescribing certain treatments like immunotherapy? by JustMe182
Cancer treatment is VERY dangerous. In many cases it might kill faster than illness itself. Meanwhile early stages of cancer are often quite responsive to lighter drugs.
As a rule of thumbs - you want to treat, not to kill. And thus you will not use potentially lethal treatment before you tried safer options and cancer development pattern gives you time for such trials.

Reply to ELI5 - Why do criminals get sentenced to Life without Parole PLUS ten years for example? by sir_cas
First of all life centence does not mean untill one dies. In some countries it is hardcoded value like 25 years.
Second there is such thing as amnesty. It is not rare new president makes an amnesty to reduce prison time for some years. Generally it target small groups like those who were imprisoned for political things, sometimes it target all prisoners. To prevent accidental homicide maniac release some years are added above life sentence.

applying current to water will boil it. Note that the water became relatively darker than it was. Often it is harmless - oxidized iron. Sometimes it forms toxic compounds like sulfuric salts (such compounds do not darken the water and it is indistinguishable from normal water)

Reply to comment by untermensch1 in Eli5: if cardio makes the heart stronger by increasing heart rate and blood pressure, why do energy drinks damage it? by CrammedMeat
All your organs are autonomous. They rarelly need extra instruction from brains. Heart synapsis are affected by chemicals in energy drinks and treat them as instruction to work harder. Brain detect abnormal heart rate increase and start sending signals to hear to slow down because there is nor reason for wasting energy. Conflicting signals can cause arrhythmia and sever arrhythmia can lead to heart arest. While hear arest is an extreme case, arrhythmia by itself is not something heart should expirience regulary.

When doing cardio preasure and rate rise gradually. Energy drinks make very sharp rise to level which almost always above optimal even for trained people. There is also another problems that body tries to fight unnatural heart rate rise and that might lead to heart arest.

And a bit funnier - there are a lot of varios materials in mud water which will start to react with each other if there is enogh current making water toxic and undrinkable

Reply to ELI5 why most animals seem have a large number of sensory systems that are close to the brain? by shficjshx
Sensory systems transfer tons of information, which requires thick neural medium. That fragile, enrgy consuming and takes a lot of space ( which make it more fragile). Thick nerves also will expirience a lot of stress and noise from muscle systems, that will require more brain activity from brain to filter signals, that even more wasted energy
Worth to mention humans ( and many other animals) has several neural systems beyound brain. Eg intestine has very advanced neural system, which governs only that part of body

Reply to comment by BlowjobPete in ELI5: How exactly do we get some much power from engine now, than we did 40, 50, 60 years ago? by Micromashington
There few thing which should be adressed too
Better lubricating oils and steel quality allows engines to opperate on higher power without melting.
Better design of valves. Old valves had ton of space between them and engine walls. Thus lot of conbastion agent were escape prior burning, greatly reducing power. Big distance was important for 2 things. First manufacturing was on much lower level and offset could be big. Second steel quality resulted in high expansion of metal, so it was important to leave space to prevent stacking and wall break

Ios is based on mac os, which is linux bsd operation system.
Linux F1 exploit was around at least 20 years, but was discovered around 5 years ago
Lunux is more localized not in terms of supporting less, but in terms of access. Eg on windows application is spread to many different places, which has different access levels
Have you seen phone which supports floppy disk? There are so many more protocols which computers support. Especially on system level.

Computers has much more legacy code to support and that create a lot of vulnerabilities.
Also computers have to support much more protocols, which also create some vulnerabilities
Android and ios uses linux cores, which are more localized and have less attackable structure. But most importanly linux problems are much less known, because it became popular relatively recently and some thing maynot be found yet.
