Yeah, that’s true about contact tracing unfortunately. But OP was looking to have their case of Covid added to official counts, which is slightly different. They are still being done and get posted to places like:

What's the COVID risk in your area? CDC maps leave some people confused https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/03/10/1085797307/cdcs-new-covid-metrics-can-leave-individuals-struggling-to-understand-their-risk

I hear you, and I don’t disagree! Wastewater surveillance is more accurate but I don’t think we’re doing that here. (Correct me if I’m wrong!) And I think the current standard is to assume positivity rate is 3x what the official number is, because people test at home (or not at all).

Limiting transmission went out the window a long time ago. Like 2020. And public health has been made into a series of personal choices, but some people do use the official counts as a (imperfect but only) way to track surges and adjust their personal activities.

IME, there are people who just don’t give a fuck or believe it’s real etc etc but there are more people who want to do the right thing(s) but can’t (ex paid sick leave) or just don’t even know how/why (and you can’t blame them, not their fault). So for those people, I just try to share accurate info. Maybe that’s pointless. But maybe it’s a tiny ripple against misinformation? Dunno.

Not suggesting pulling a Leonia but genuine question.… I’ve noticed Weehawken has a “locals only” sign outside the Lincoln, on 19th and Hackensack Plank Rd. Are they not being sued because they don’t actually enforce it? Or just because no one has tried to sue, yet? It’s been there awhile, months at least.

Agree, 👎🏻 on urban sadhu (formerly Jivamukti). They’d probably say they are traditional vs workout or gym yoga. But what a lot of ego for “traditional” yoga lol. Feels outdated now, and I don’t mean outdated from traditional or Indian roots, outdated from a white Boomer interpretation of those roots.

Fresh Direct is definitely more expensive than shopping IRL but I’ve never used another online delivery service so I can’t compare apples to apples (lol). But they have great customer service, decent selection. I think the produce is fine. On rare occasion something is spoiled or damaged, you can get a refund easily. (I’ve also heard they treat their employees well but can’t confirm firsthand.)

My first reaction as well. Secaucus and Rutherford fall squarely into the “nothing to do” category, not just Palisades Park. Does not sound like your realtor knows what they are talking about.

As a young woman living alone for first time after college on 57k, I’d lean more towards the Heights or BL with roommate(s) than JSQ alone though. A better realtor can help with this.

Also consider getting a bike for transportation.

Edit: yes, 30 is young!

Honestly not trying to snark, but did you try searching previous posts on the topic? I know the search function isn’t always great but there’s been a few recent threads that will be a good starting point. Check Hoboken sub as well.

To help narrow down, consider why you want to volunteer, what interests or skills you have (doesn’t necessarily have to be any special skill though. Lots of opportunities are just like, show up / be humble / be useful ) and what kind of time commitment you can make.

Good luck!

Agree with Englewood or Hackensack, in general. Specifically have taken my child to pediatric specialists at Hackensack and had good experience.

I’m so sorry this happened with your son. It’s a horrible feeling to have doubts or not be able to trust someone treating your child. (Been there.) Was wondering when this happened? Only because people have been saying JCMC has gotten “better”, so I was wondering if this was recent.

I have lived in all three (and different parts of NYC)…

You do not want to live in Weehawken without a car. Or probably at all. It’s very residential. There is no real downtown (there is a section that is called “downtown” but it is not “A Downtown”). You could walk to Bergenline Ave in Union City for shops/restaurants but depends on where you are in Weehawken. You’d probably Uber to Hoboken and Jersey City. I

From Weehawken into NYC, you’ll take a ferry (and you’ll have to walk/uber to it) or more likely, a bus/jitney. On the NYC side, bus drops you at the Port Authority. Which I think might literally be hell on earth. And definitely not somewhere you want to commute through at 1am. (Again, talking from experience.)

From the Port Authority, you’re reasonable walking distance of restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen or Theatre District. That’s about it though. You’re not going to be hanging out in Times Sq or Garment District. So now you’ll have to take subway/cab to the parts of the city you actually want to hang out in. It’s a schlep.

Re: Hoboken. Like others have said, it skews young (post college), and finance bro. Though it has some redeemable qualities. Very walkable. Can easily live without a car; more easily than WITH a car. You can take PATH train to downtown JC or, when you take it to NYC, the stops are much more likely to be in neighborhoods you actually want to hang out in. Also path > subway is faster to Brooklyn than getting there from Weehawken.

Downtown JC is more diverse than Hoboken (but not as diverse as it used to be) and more the vibe you described. Same story with taking the PATH train directly to where you’re most likely hanging out.

Taking the PATH home on weekends and nights suuuucks. But Port Authority is way worse!

None will be a “true NYC experience” bc they are not NYC! They’re their own thing, just different. But they’re closer to NYC experiences than Florida. You should do it!
