I lived in 929 my first year as a PhD student. It’s fine but there is nothing, I mean nothing, to do around there. Also my window used to blow open in the middle of the night and they refused to acknowledge this needed to be fixed. Living there or one of the other close buildings seems worth it for like residents or other people needing to be in the hospital at crazy hours but for just classes and maybe some study groups? IMO not worth it.

If you want to be able to walk to campus, upper fells is nice and will put you closer to things to do. There is a Hopkins shuttle that will drop you off that runs after 6pm if you’re feeling uncomfortable. If you don’t care about walking, living on the shuttle route that goes between the hospital and the undergrad campus (either in Mt Vernon or Hampden) is good too, though I stuck with the various SE neighborhoods (Patterson Park, upper fells, Canton).

I found a map from a non-verizon site and it looks like my area has "coverage", but Verizon says I only have access to their home 5G plans. I think it could be that my apartment building itself doesn't have the capability. I think my problem is most of my friends/co-workers probably have similarly un-upgraded apartments and so do not have access either, and so I thought it was like Baltimore where I lived before (essentially no Fios in the city).

Funnily enough, you have to do the exact same thing if your self-employed or otherwise don't have your federal taxes withheld. Just send them money every quarter. (there is a form to help you estimate it since federal is more complicated, but you don't file the form, just send the money with a little piece of paper saying how much money you're sending) Had to do it for my first year filing taxes and it def stressed me out.

Well, I guess those knives are your sharpening practice knives now..yikes. The good news is you'd be hard pressed to screw up you own knives that badly with just a whetstone. Sorry I don't have any good suggestions for places to learn but good luck! People sometimes make sharpening with a stone seem really fancy but if you're just going for a functional edge and not a mirror polish its not too bad.

This was my dog’s first snow storm after we adopted her. Still love to watch that video of her first steps out the door and falling in love. Neighbors all came together to shovel out the back alley and then threw a big party. Shoveled lots of walks and left my car in the garage at work for two weeks and just walked about an hour each way to avoid the fight over parking. Had a pretty nice time and felt good about my neighborhood.

Eh, that shopping center has a chick fil a with a drive thru that takes up a ton of space. It's not really "in" Canton so much as adjacent in a former industrial area. Still think drive thrus are a waste of gas/space and we shouldn't be building them though.

Honestly what surprised me is the idea that shake shack is fast enough for a driver through. Don't think I've ever gotten my food in less that 15 minutes in any one of their restaurants.

Yeah, I've had people ask me the time and also the weather in the park where I normally walk my dog. Never caused any further issues that I usually answer. It's unclear if they're after anything further or just the way I act/my possessions suggest I'm not worth stealing from.
