This is very informative but stop with the private prisons - these hold fewer than 5% of incarcerated people (excluding ICE detainees) and their use is on the decline.

It’s just not a thing.

Getting that ticket was actually good luck in a way - it alerted you to the issue sooner than you might have noticed it. Especially if you’re moving away soon… you get to deal with this prospectively, before the police come knocking on your door. (Which, after you report it, they probably won’t).

Good luck / Bon Voyage 🍀

I lived on Lombard Street in Center City for several years when I first moved here. I cannot tell you how much I hated those Duck Tours. Because I could hear the tour guide patter with the loudspeaker in my apartment. So loud. Every time they went by.

The horse carriage tours would come by less frequently, but I didn’t mind hearing the clop-clop of the horses at all ;-)

My totally legit mechanic (who I’ve been going to for like 20+ years) recently began imposing a 4% surcharge on card payments (and no longer take checks). This is pretty exorbitant for car repairs, and is clearly meant to encourage cash payments (or it could be interpreted as a total “fuck you” to their customers, but that doesn’t seem very smart for that to be their intention).

I’m wondering if other businesses are doing the same, to cut costs.

I found it obnoxious but at least… now I know. There is a large sign in the shop stating this, but my partner, who dropped off the car, doesn’t pay attention to his surroundings. So I only learned about it when I arrived to pick up and pay for it.

Car?

Let’s assume you mean a subway car.
I actually ride the subway and have never experienced or witnessed someone smoking a cigarette on the train. Sometimes they carry a smelly half-smoked cigarette, which is stinky.
Sometimes there are other unpleasant smells from other people. But that’s life in a city, proximity to other people.

Even if you have to encounter “second hand smoke” during your 10-minute ride, I promise you, that’s not going to instantly give you cancer. Really.
