i also learned that some people never ever drink tap water … like if they’re thirsty they just crack open a water bottle. my family only used water bottles if we were out for an event for something, otherwise we stuck a cup under the sink and drank that shit lol

wouldn’t be surprised, a friend of mine who lives in my hood said she caught the owner of her nearby corner store using food stamps to buy products for the store. not sure if other stores do the same with em but probably so

like deadass there’s a regular that comes in to my work and he often brings in magazines - he comes over to me and points to a part on the page and goes, “what does this say?” or “can you tell me who this guy is?” (i read the article for him to find out). he even asked me to help him fill out the application for his REAL ID, he had no clue what was on the paper. i thought it was odd and was trying to figure out why he needed me to do this for him, and then i realized - this guy can’t read! he can read very little, like he understood the “no bathroom” sign on the door but even struggles to do that. this guy is 54 years old. fifty fucking four. he was homeless and begging for a long time but now he finally has a job!!!!!

just wanted to point out that students living off campus en masse is a relatively recent concept (within the last 30 years or so) while most people who have been living here since the 50s/60s. About 20 years ago my block was entirely non students, now it is 95% students. Just want to point out that a lot of the people who originally moved here only moved to this area because it was dangerous to move into other neighborhoods as black families. Redlining was very much legal then.
