Repetition and specialization.

Instead of having a team of 20 dudes building a plane from start to finish, two guys will rapidly and previcely do the first approximately ten percent, then another team will do a little work, then another team, and another, and another, with each team specializing in getting really really good at only the part of the process they're involved in

"marble hornets" is an early YouTube ARG with practically zero budget that used a combination of POV, conservative shaky cam, "Slenderman" camera distortions and basic CGI. (Fun fact, this series is also the origin of the modern Slenderman)

The result is one of the most compelling and interesting amateur films I've ever witnessed

  1. avoid anything digitally controlled, avoid Samsung like the plague. fridges from the early 2010's are usually pretty energy efficient and wont be unrepairable when it breaks down.
  2. Mops are explicitly not buy-for-life. That's just nastly.
  3. No suggestion for the steam cleaner; never needed one. Use ammonia based glass cleaner for almost everything.
  4. Vacuums go bad; youre best off buying second hand and replacing when it breaks.
  5. top loaded, analog controlled washer and dryer; aim for from the early 2000's again. washers and dryers from that era are easy to work on and use generally interchangeable parts.
  6. whole-house water filters are borderline a scam imo.
  7. your central air system has a rather intense filter built into it; just make sure that puppy is clean and you should be dust free.

It's got nothing to do with them being "modern"

This was literally their express purpose when they were invented; to keep moisture out of moisture sensitive machinery in factories. It was just a bonus that it also made things cooler.

I completely forget where I read this, so apologies for this but

There's a region of Russia with iron-based red sand. It is theorized that this was where we got the first refined iron from as all you need to refine this red sand is a clay crucible and a particularly hot fire.

This red sand is only present in any significant quantity in this region of Russia, so until methods of getting refined iron from virgin ores became available it was extremely rare.

A similar thing happened with steel; humans knew how to make steel for thousands of years, it just wasn't practical to use for anything other than high-end weapons and tools until someone figured out how to mass produce it in the 19th century.

My understanding is that most modern anti-semitism stems from a roman practice that made it illegal for a Jew to be anything other than a money handler (money handlers were considered dirty), and then the roman economy collapsed. Who do you blame for that event other than the race of people pigeonholed into controlling the money?
