There are good bagels but no excellent bagels.

Providence bagel is my favorite but they are too damn big. I guess because they profit most from lunch-sized sandwiches. Too bad the sandwich fillings are mediocre. Coffee is good though.

>not sure how walking on a sidewalk that's an overpass is a big deal for 150 ft

Maybe you would be sure if you actually walked there much

Also, if only it were merely the length of the overpass. The highway blights a blocks wide strip along both sides where not much but neglected parking lots, tire shops, traffic choked streets and, how convenient, Crossroads are to be found.

yup, layers.

Wool socks are a must all winter. Don't forget long underwear. My threshold for putting them on is 20 degrees.

Hours outdoors in the dead of winter? Unless doing active sports or work where it would get in the way, you will love a knee length coat!

Pick a direction to walk from your front door and explore your surroundings. Get familiar with your neighbors and let them see you. Look for the nearest places to shop, eat, hang out. Walk in and check them out. In even the least famous neighborhoods you will see funky or splendid old houses, trees, gardens, animals, weird miscellaneous creative stuff. Repeat the process. When you find some local favorite sights and places you can share them here!

Old fashioned investigative journalism. The kind that takes weeks or months. Stories that politicians and the donor class does not want us to see.

For instance, I would love a proper expose of how a boutique hotel on Westminster Street owned by a long-ago mayor can grab 100 feet of sidewalk and turn it into private parking while any other changes to streets face years of meetings, studies and committees.

Buildings like that on sites like that are exactly how this city should grow so I do not want to get all negative here but...

I feel bad for people paying those rents and not even getting a bay window, or cross ventilation.

Maybe someday the cheap exterior panels on all those bland buildings can be replaced with cheap cornices and friezes for a neotraditional revival.

All? You must have just been super lucky. (Not so lucky if fire gets in there).

But thanks for reminding us: It is worth using a phone to take pics upward from the foundation sill in hope of finding a convenient stud bay that is not blocked like they usually are.

DIY makes sense if you can scout a route for the cable alongside plumbing or a chimney (look down from the attic) that will not require opening a wall in the first floor unit - unless your DIY skill set includes cutting and patching the holes super neat and quick.

If landlord and first floor tenant agree, tacking an ethernet cable in an inconspicuous corner of a closet may be the solution.

Otherwise its a job for a pro.
