Another PNWer here. My experience is that PNW folks are nice but not friendly and Boston folks are not nice but friendly. What I mean by that is that someone in the NW is generally open and willing to meet new people but they are flakey and not the greatest friends. Bostonians are cold and closed off but if you make friends with one they will give you the shirt off their back and be there when you need them.

As a Canadian, living in Rhode Island, I always ask for people to bring me a coffee crisp. Also, I've never seen ketchup chips in RI or OHenry although those are essentially Baby Ruth's.

I'm not sure where you are in Canada but just take your friend to bulk barn. My wife's head explodes everytime we go there when we visit. Nothing like it in the US.

My door to door averages between 54-62mins. This includes biking to the train station and walking from south station to my office.

I think the monthly passes are $348/month in Amtrak vs $388 for MBTA. My employer subsidizes my commuter passes to encourage use of public transit so the cost really wasn't part of the calculus for us when we chose to move down here.

If you're going to do it and you can make your schedule work, Amtrak is the way to go. Their monthly pass is $40 cheaper than MBTA and half the time. Pre-COVID I was 5 days a week. It got a little monotonous but I also enjoyed the commute to decompress. It's not for everyone but it's a small price to pay for what I would argue is a better quality of life for my family here.
