No, you need to practice putting your chains on and off and driving around with them on in less life-threatening environs. Going over the pass in good weather will do nothing to improve your winter driving skills.

I took the pandemic as an opportunity to retire and I've spent the last three years traveling a lot in my '99 Tacoma with a slide-in camper. So I'm rarely going over 65 mph, which gives me a lot of time to observe other drivers. I see it all the time on i-90, on 84 through the Gorge, heading out through eastern WA, OR, SLC, I-80. So yes, I get what you mean, and I don't think it's limited to our I-5 corridor.

The google data is from years of empirical data collection, from thousands and thousands of individuals, compared to what 5 or 6 people here with more limited sample sizes will tell you.

But yeah, your's is the typical response when anyone points out that you can answer the question, faster, and more better using Google. I don't think we're ever coming back from that.

You can go on Google Maps and route Tacoma to Tumwater. Then you can click the Depart At... clock and scroll along in 15 minute intervals. You'll see when the slowdowns start to develop.
