Sure, I'd love to ban cars from most of the city, but that seems a bit impractical. We could at least start by putting more onus on car drivers to actually give a fuck or pay up. But the city doesn't have any authority to do that without a state law, and there doesn't seem to be much willingness from the rest of the state to put more penalties on dangerous drivers.

So general car culture? The way people casually drive twice the speed limit and completely ignore pedestrians while making turns here is terrifying. It really feels like most drivers in this city don't care if they kill someone as long as they get where they want to go as fast as possible (which is a bit ironic because the subway is usually a lot faster anyway, but then they'd have to deal with other humans).

Who is "they"? Maybe the City could put additional timers on the lights or have more cops paid overtime to just stand around and wait for something to happen, but ultimately it's up to car drivers to not be murderous assholes (which also seems impractical given my experience with drivers in this city).

I'd prefer to charge both them and cars for parking actually, but if we're giving the space away for free to individuals and businesses for cars that cause congestion and pollution then we can let a business use the same space to serve meals to locals...

Not the ones who brought their kids to it... There are a bunch of angry adults protesting who could have just chosen to not bring their children to these events and let others live their lives. They're the ones forcing these conversations on everyone else.

What is the point of any event for children? Why do we have circuses where men dress up in white face paint and makeup and do silly things? Why is there a children's show with puppets, or a big purple dinosaur? Kids like silly things, and this is a way of engaging and entertaining them, perhaps with the added benefit of making them a bit less hostile to different lifestyles. The better question is why are so many people so angry about this?

I imagine that there are a lot of words that you are not familiar with. That doesn't mean they're not words.

The issue is the way that judges are selected in NY. The party holds a "judicial nominating convention" at which it selects the candidates that will be on the ballot, and then they all run unopposed. There is no primary to win; there is no transparency in the party selection process. The solution you propose simply doesn't exist. This is a real problem with judicial elections in NY that does not have an easy solution.

Isn't that what the lawsuit is for? They're hardly keeping him in prison to prove a point - they're doing everything they can to get him released when he's being held without cause.

It's also illegal under City & State law to discriminate based on source of income. It's easy to see how one major lawsuit or Human Rights Commission proceeding will cost you a whole lot more than just not discriminating against poor people and accepting the vouchers.
