Sure, I'd love to ban cars from most of the city, but that seems a bit impractical. We could at least start by putting more onus on car drivers to actually give a fuck or pay up. But the city doesn't have any authority to do that without a state law, and there doesn't seem to be much willingness from the rest of the state to put more penalties on dangerous drivers.

So general car culture? The way people casually drive twice the speed limit and completely ignore pedestrians while making turns here is terrifying. It really feels like most drivers in this city don't care if they kill someone as long as they get where they want to go as fast as possible (which is a bit ironic because the subway is usually a lot faster anyway, but then they'd have to deal with other humans).

What is the point of any event for children? Why do we have circuses where men dress up in white face paint and makeup and do silly things? Why is there a children's show with puppets, or a big purple dinosaur? Kids like silly things, and this is a way of engaging and entertaining them, perhaps with the added benefit of making them a bit less hostile to different lifestyles. The better question is why are so many people so angry about this?

The issue is the way that judges are selected in NY. The party holds a "judicial nominating convention" at which it selects the candidates that will be on the ballot, and then they all run unopposed. There is no primary to win; there is no transparency in the party selection process. The solution you propose simply doesn't exist. This is a real problem with judicial elections in NY that does not have an easy solution.
