57 on Metacritic and a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't scream "well received" to me.

yeah I've heard that story before. And if it's true, then it's perfect.

no one needs to suffer through eight hours of something they don't enjoy. I made it 30 minutes into the first EP and it's just not good.

and wouldn't you know it, that was about when the quality took a nosedive straight to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
I'm glad that Akiva Goldsman seems like he's gonna be busy with the I Am Legend sequel for a while.

Reviewers would probably watch the entire season if it was released to them by the studio. But generally the reviewers are watching these shows in advance so the review can be published when the show actually debuts; and for whatever reason only the first X episodes are given to the reviewers to watch and review.

Some shows are products of their time and that context matters. You're right that TNG S1 wouldn't have a chance today.
However, TNG miraculously evolved into a consistently excellent and timeless show at the start of S3, even if it started getting a little uneven in seasons 6 and 7. The TNG of S3 and beyond would still be a hit today.

usually there's some sort of text in a review that says "four episodes watched for review" or something like that.

that was at the very end of the first episode, so that woulda been like 45 minutes in. But that is exactly where I decided that I wasn't interested in the show anymore.

I watched the first episode and kept thinking, "doesn't this company have lawyers? Isn't everything the consultant is doing is illegal under California law?"

huge fan of this show. One of the best I watched last year.
The music was also very on point.

is it just me or can you hear a Whiter Shade of Pale?
I remember when this first aired -- it was advertised to death on NBC as an event miniseries and I don't think it was received very well. But when I met my spouse in the late 2000s, she had this on DVD and convinced me to watch it. And even though it looked beyond stupid and campy, I watched it and actually loved it. It has such a strange energy to it, and tonally it is actually pretty dark in places, but the chemistry between all the actors is great and it ends up being a ton of fun. We've watched it a few times and I wouldn't mind watching it again.

ah Borne and A Strange Bird are two of my favorites of his. A Strange Bird was heartbreaking.
I will say that I couldn't penetrate Dead Astronauts tho.
