If the Sub Shop is what I think it is, there's also one downtown. Good call on Greek Belly, I really like that place. The owner has had a booth at the C-Street culture fest a couple of times and he seems pretty nice on top of making some pretty good gyros.

FYI Kai has a couple of their bento boxes back on the menu. Teriyaki chicken and beef. Sadly, no salmon last time I went.

Last time I was at Zayka was late last year and the buffet still wasn't back, but they had a combination plate that featured the 4-5 most popular items along with some naan and sauces and rice pudding, and it was pretty filling.

Oh wow, I didn't know about his parents getting sick. That sucks about his dad. I never got to meet the dad, but back when his mom was helping out she'd always make sure to give me a big hug before I left. She's a sweet lady.

That's one of the reasons I find reddit really cringey. If the crowd disagrees with something it can be downvoted and made to disappear. Doesn't exactly lead to open conversation when contrasting opinions can be buried. You learn more in life from the people you disagree with.

That being said, I'm surprised there were (and continue to be) downvotes. It's a pretty popular restaurant and not at all controversial. It's not like I recommended mexican villa or something. :P

I think buses are the main concern, the main bus terminal is right next to the bridge. I've not met the owner. That being said I've heard from a person familiar with the owner that he's simply asking for way too much money. For reference his other property is just a few hundred yards away near the old houn dawg plant.

It's no longer an option unfortunately, goddam covid, but I just wanted to hold a moment of silence for Falstaff's burger and homemade chips with jalapeno/dill dipping sauce. It was a sort of homemade, full fat, backyard grill type of patty and somehow it just tasted different than everyone else's, but right. Miss that place.

Don't know, but I just wanted to comment to show my respect for an 85 Celica. A friend had one that generation, absolute blast to drive.

There's a resto-mod place in Ava called Gary Rod and Chassis that specializes in 70's and 80's Japanese sports cars. They do some neat builds. They've got a facebook page.

Can't think it would be too bad to rebuild a Toyota engine of that era.

FYI if you watch for them you can catch international cultural events a few times a year. Different groups represented in Spfd will cook their native dishes. They just had one at the Oasis, sometimes they have International nights at the Morris Center (MSU) downtown that coincide with artwalks. I missed a Brazilian food sampling night there last Friday.

Just start on one end of Commercial St. and work your way to the other. Take a quick side trip to Queen City Soul Food just around the corner and you'll hit soul food, Pizza House, Lebanese, Peruvian, Italian, Cuban, Dutch, and Ruthies for 'Whatever Joe wants to make' night. Joe makes some weird stuff sometimes, but it always looks good. Lindberg's has great burgers and often will have an exotic burger of some sort on the menu. (gator tail about 80% of the time)

Also come spring Millsap Farm pizza club will be back in session. It's a farm out N Glenstone near Fellows Lake. They have clay wood fired pizza ovens and they do buffet style all you can eat pizza outdoors with a live band on Thursday nights in spring and summer. Uses ingredients they grow on the farm. I realize it's technically American fare, but some of their flavor combos are unique. A very tasty white sauce pizza with sliced white grapes stands out in my memory.

If you watch craigslist or facebook marketplace or look for ads at some of the local Mexican restaurants you can find a lot of people selling homemade tamales. Sometimes they're really good.

MSU has Carrie's Cafe and I think OTC has an equivalent. They're the restaurants run by culinary students. I remember Andrew Zimmer going to the SOTO one in Branson and raving about it. I confess that although I work here, I've never been to Carries. Something I have to fix this year. Their season starts in about a week and this is the menu:

My favorite go to for a quick meal in my neighborhood is Misaki (formerly Little Tokyo). Think Nakato's but a lot more casual, cheaper version of it. Tasty hibachi for cheap.

I had a chicken sandwich and small fries. The small was really small, it was maybe 8 French fries and they seemed pretty old and stale. The chicken sandwich was more like what I'd expect from a vending machine than a restaurant. In fact if you told me they'd just gone down to Walmart and bought out their pre-made chicken Sammies I'd be unable to shoot that theory down. I don't see them lasting long.

Nobody's trying to pin anything on you and i realize it isnt just you saying that stuff here. I just see people, including yourself, saying this stuff in this reddit group and it makes me curious because it just doesn't reflect the experiences myself, my family or my friends have had. I'm sorry those aren't the experiences you guys have. I'm always curious how that happens though. I've seen someone describe my parents block full of retirees in well kept older houses as full of meth heads and daily drive bys. My dad joked it must be happening at 3 when everybody naps. I'm truly sorry you've had bad experiences and people from your end of town are always welcome to enjoy the things we have here.

As far as real estate prices go, I bought my house for quality of life, not to resell it. If I did it over again I'd go for more land but I'd certainly stay in the same part of town.

So because you had bad experiences in one of the sketchiest neighborhoods in town you've decided this whole half of town is bad? There's a whole 90 percent of town that isn't mt vernon to college. Oh well, our loss I'm sure. Enjoy the south side and best of luck to you. I'll continue to enjoy where I live on this end.

I mean we have 3 universities, 2 airports, a minor league baseball stadium, the best lake in town, now with Mt bike trails and a sailing club added to the kayaking, numerous conservation areas, the restaurants and bars here are awesome and the people have been really nice for the 45 years ive been here. The south side has traffic, the mall, mega churches and Mexican villas. I can never understand why anyone would prefer the latter.
