Wonder what the meaning of "Buffalo soldier" actually was/is. The 32 Battalion from the South African Defense Force way back in the 80s and 90s was infamous and badass, slaying commies and taking few casualties. Their insignia was a water Buffalo, and they were referred to as the Buffalo Soldiers. Clearly they aren't the Buffalo Soldiers Bob Marley sings about, and they aren't related to the guys in this post, yet they are all referenced as the Buffalo Soldiers. Anyone know the history behind that designation and/or whether it's just a coincidence they all have the same specific name?

They are well aware of the dissatisfaction, believe it or not being contacted by a senator about poor service is (a weird) one of many ways customers file complaints. They are also aware of every single thing happening in office routes, are well aware of the shortages, and do their best to make current employees pick up the slack. As you can imagine, this pushes more employees out and the cycle continues.

I make 70k (and rising each year) at the post office and have great benefits. The pay isn't the problem, lots of jobs that start you off at even more than the po starts have the same problem finding help.

People love to complain about the jobs they have not paying a living wage instead of going to one that does. That requires leaving the comfort zone and learning a new skill or trade, not something the poor barista class seems to be interested in.

My office just hired the mid 20s age girl who worked for the cleaning company that cleans the office, we convinced her to apply because she was cool and she is kicking ass and making much more money now.

Congress regulates our retail/service prices and not much more. The post office is forced to keep prices lower than competitors, but we operate only on revenue and zero taxes, and not allowed to make a profit. Best thing they could do would be to let the post office be competitive in the market if you want to see wages rise. Although they're pretty good, I'm only five years in and make 70k per year plus benefits and 5% matching for the gov equivalent of a 401k.

As a postal employee it drives me bananas that the single most common response by everyone who complains is that they contact the senators. They can't do anything about our staffing shortages, they can't magically make people start applying for the job, they can't hire or employ the national guard to deliver mail.

It's like contacting the regional manager of McDonald's to complain about the missing fries in your burger King order.

The Williston office routes (mail and package sorting and route start/stop) are being relocated to pine St in Burlington, the current office will soon just have po boxes. It's also about dock and office space, there's been so many packages being backed up there and a general increase in volume so they are basically out of room inside too.

As I said, none of those changes to the logistical side of shipping, sorting, and transport affect any efficiency at the local office delivery level. The problem there is lack of staff.

Does your dinner get cooked when you aren't home? No, because there's no one there to cook it. Same reason mail isn't delivered on some routes some days, there no one there to run the route.

Dejoy has nothijng to do with nobody applying to work, nor does he have direct involvement in the local and regional management failures to balance the work load and avoid overworking an underemployed workforce.

Down voting for what? Someone who has actually worked in the very office you're talking about tells you what's going on and you don't want to accept it?

I work for usps and this is so far off base, but not unexpected considering the demographic of this area.. That really has nothing to do with what's happening, especially at the local office level. His changes are logistical, like how the trucks and plants operate and move mail/packages. Those changes are actually legitimate and bringing it up to a more modern standard.

the problems our offices are facing are severe employee shortages and regional management ineptitude, compounded by the increasing Amazon parcel volume.

There are annual auctions, used to be two. Might be some traveling fur buyers around but I don't know. I only trap enough to tan on my own and make stuff so I haven't yet gotten into that aspect of it. From what I've read in the trappers post, coyotes are anticipated to be down this year, but it doesn't hurt trying or just holding until next year if they bounce back. On that note I highly recommend reading the trappers post. has lots of great articles, info and projections on markets, and state by state news. You get a subscription with the 25 dollar membership to the Vermont trappers association, which alone is helpful for the future of trapping here. They work with wardens and legislators, put on events, and teach the trapper Ed courses. They would also have more info on fur buyers so I'd reach out to them.

I hunt and trap. Favorite is trapping for coyotes because they're smart as hell and have great noses. Always a game of wits with them, and the suspense that builds every time you approach your traps never subsides. Close second is trapping beaver because it's the opposite in terms of difficulty but it's still just as fun. Plus beaver meat is delightful. I tan my skins and make hats and mittens and ideally more items in time.

Cool stories.... Well, depends what you think is cool. I think it's pretty cool trying to get an intelligent animal with a territory of hundreds to thousands of acres to step on a spot on the ground the size of a soda can lid. This year I had a multi day pissing match with a coyote who stepped and pissed all around a trap but because I mishandled the trap and got my scent on it he could smell it and avoid it. That to me is cool...and frustrating. I also think hunting them is cool, going out mid winter in the middle of the night and using mouth calls to mimic prey or other coyotes brings a different element to hunting than traditional deer or bear hunting.
