Those things are beasts.

My dad bought gave me one before I went on an exchange program to the USSR (back during Glasnost when absolutely nobody predicted they were going to spectacularly collapse a few years later). When we got there the black market guys all tried to trade for hard currency.

The common items for sale/trade were crappy rabbit fur hats and cheap Komandirskie "military" watches. They asked to trade one of those for my G-Shock.

I told them I'd trade but only for a sable hat. They didn't think it was worth it so I took off the G-Shock and threw it on the concrete as hard as I could. One strap popped off and they laughed at me. Then I put the strap back on and asked if they wanted to put their watches to the same test. They just walked away.

It's got a few more scratches but it still works as well as it did when it was brand new.

Haha. That thing will outlast you.

They have a world record for driving a bunch of trucks over it.

~~People have shot them and they keep going. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4G1wFLVgcc ~~

And tried to explode them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2NMhP-utCY

Edit: The bullet one is a hoax. Dumb on me for not double checking. There are still plenty of legit videos of people subjecting the watch to damage that would maim or kill anyone wearing it. I think it's still safe to say the watch will outlast you :)

The only time I've ever replaced a G-Shock was when I lost my G-Shock. Guaranteed it's still ticking away at the bottom of that river.

I have one exactly like it! Love that it sets itself, including daylight saving time, and charges its battery from the sun. You basically dont have to do anything to have a watch that always keeps the time right.

Objectively this particular G-Shock is one of the greatest watches ever created -

  • It's incredibly rugged which means it will take almost anything you throw at it. Even if you break something you can easily get replacement parts and fix it yourself.
  • It's light-powered which means it will keep ticking as long as you expose it to light - even indoor lighting. Maybe in 12 or 15 years you'll need to replace the capacitor in it but that's cheap and easy to fix.
  • It's damn near waterproof and can survive water pressures higher than everyone but the most dedicated divers may need.
  • It's a quartz watch which means it will stay accurate better than the best mechanical watches and what's better it's synced to atomic clocks which means it will always be accurate.
  • It has additional feature such as a stopwatch, alarms, etc.

It's probably the last true "tool" watch left and it's cheap and fairly compact unlike most other G-Shocks with a similar set of features.

Subjectively people may find it fugly and I can't blame them for that. It is a very ugly watch though that's half the charm of G-shocks.

I've had the same watch for 7 years, beat to hell in a shop environment with chemicals and oils, to the ocean countless times, a few toddlers teething mouths, and it still works like a charm.

I now also have a nice purely mechanical manual wind-sup watch for the nicer occasions, but the Casio remains the daily beater.

I found one (freewheeling, not radio/atomic) in a dry rocky wash halfway up a mountain in the Desolation Wilderness, CA, a couple of decades ago. It was half-buried -- it had obviously been dropped at least a year earlier, and washed down the cwm in spring thaws. You could barely read the face. We took it back to the tent, and the next morning its tinny alarm went off at 6:30am.

My son wears my old gshock on one wrist and a fitness tracker on the other. Thinking about getting him one of the square gshock move that have the step tracker built in. But I noticed they don't make it with tough solar only 2 year battery which is probably still pretty good.

Anyone tried one of those gshock move step slim or whatever?

Buddy said everything just kinda sloughed off the bones when they finally went to move him.

When I was in the Navy around 2001/2002 my buddy had one of these G-Shock watches and I had like a Ironman or something and I bet him that mine was more durable than his (you get bored in the Navy at times and look for anything to entertain yourself)

So anyway we went to the top of the ship and tossed them down about 100-150ft onto the focsle (front part of the ship) and suffice to say that I lost the bet. It's hard to make out but mine (right) completely shattered and his G-Shock (left) was totally fine like nothing had happened.

I have the Globe edition g shock with the natural rubber band. It's been on my wrist every day for the last 11 years and it's had an incredibly hard life and I love it. If anyone knows what bezel to use as a replacement let me know. I found a strap that worked with it through some Triston Trial and error, but not a bezel. This thing's got some funky design to the strap and bezel.

As someone who treats equipment rough, I can attest to how awesome this timepiece is.

I've fallen down a mountain snowboarding with this thing. I've worn it landscaping and renovating houses. It's been with me snorkeling underwater in kelp forests.

It's got the toughness of a g shock without the bulk and I never have to change batteries. Whoever thought to make it solar powered is a genius.

I don't think you can kill this watch unless you set out intentionally to do so. And if you succeed, I'd wager you weren't wearing when you did.
