I've got a few friends and coworkers stuck on 29 N. There's a gigantic accident involving a truck. My friend tells me they've seen about a dozen ambulances and firetrucks piling into 29, right before 40. My friend just passed 100 and is trying to get to Honey Pig. GPS says it'll be an hour for them to get there.

Edit: My friend has been waiting for three hours. Whatever the carnage, the police on the police scanner said they plan to clear it by midnight. They might be there all night.

Thank you for this. I was able to send it to 2 people stuck on the roadways and then help them get from where they were stuck to where they were going.

It is a mess. I have a friend with a puking 4 year old stuck in it.

Years ago, someone once said to me “I’d rather be in traffic than the cause of it.” And that’s my commuting mantra now. There is a parent out there that would choose a puking kid over what they are going through.

This is an excellent way to put it into perspective! Sometimes all it takes is viewing it through a different paradigm. Thanks!

When I heard it, I had the same reaction. I’m pretty sure it was during some adult leadership class on paradigm shifts LOL. But, it has truly change my blood pressure when commuting. Well, and Covid took away my commute.

When my kids were little and someone made an asshole move while we were driving, we used to make up reasons for the move. It started as a way to keep me from swearing while they were in the car, but it became a thing. We would think, “That guy’s wife is in labor and he only has ten minutes to get her to a hospital,” or “That lady has to pee so badly she is about to let it rip in the car,” or ”That girl is on the way to her wedding and she is late.” It is funny how that has left me now and I sound like a sailor when someone cuts me off.

Howard County police are investigating a fatal collision in Ellicott City on Dec. 2 that killed one person and injured several others.

At approximately 6:14 p.m., a 2018 Peterbilt truck hauling a tanker was traveling northbound on Route 29 approaching the ramp for Route 40 when it rear-ended a 2002 Honda Odyssey, setting off a chain reaction collision that involved two additional vehicles. A 3-year-old passenger in the Honda was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital. Six additional people in the three vehicles that were struck were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to minor.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Route 29 north between Route 100 and Route 40 was closed for approximately five hours.

Holy shit. This is beyond horrible. I am so very sad for that family.

I wonder if the Honda merged in front of the truck without giving it enough room to stop. I see too many people driving recklessly like that these days and not take regular physics into account. Large vehicles need a lot more space to be able to slow down/stop even if the driver slams the breaks instantly.

I’m in it. Traffic isn’t going anywhere. I ditched at 100 and got off at Long Gate to go St John’s to Route 40. Well I wasn’t the only one with that idea. Trying to get to 695 eventually.

I passed it on 29 south, multiple cars are involved and I’m really hoping no one was in the backseat of these cars (especially children). It looked so terrible.

I was listening to the scanner. It was a kid, not wearing a seatbelt, and needed a medivac. I hope they are okay.

ALWAYS wear you seatbelt.

Why in the day and age are we still not wearing seatbelts.

tacitus59 t1_iypszh7 wrote

We don't know the details and it is always possible that the kid unclipped it or was wearing it improperly. But yes ... wear your seatbelts.

It’s easy to sit in a safe, warm spot and find all the faults someone else made, to make yourself feel like it could never happen to you. Guarantee the person driving the van with the child didn’t think their child would die last night. Plus, the unrestrained part is second hand info at this point.

9:00pm. Still closed. I detoured 29-South, from 100-N, to 108 West to Centennial to access Route 40. Roads are still locked down. Miles of cars stuck on 29-N. Yikes

I drove by it shortly after the accident occurred. There was a van/SUV that was crushed from the back, a tank (gas) truck, a car that was smoking, and a car that was parked away from everything. There was an eerie feeling passing by it.

Sad to hear a death did occur.

I was stuck on 29 a few years ago. Two homeboys were racing each other, cutting in front of other cars. One of them came too close to a van and spooked the driver. The driver slammed the brakes and set off a chain reaction like this one. The homies just sped away. I see it all the time now. The proverbial “accident just waiting to happen”.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of a tragic car accident that Dr. Zayneb and their two daughters were in last night.

Dr Zeyneb’s car was struck by a truck yesterday. She had both of her daughters with her, Alif (7) and Maryam (3). Baby Maryam passed away. Sister Alif is in critical condition and Dr. Zeyneb is in stable condition."

Thanks for the heads up - we saw the backup on 29N, and the traffic spilling out onto the side streets. Makes sense the low flying helicopter overhead about 30 minutes ago.

Does anyone know what happened? I was in this from 6 to 9pm, it was a disaster. I'm kinda mad that there was no traffic control

S4mm1 t1_iyqs85n wrote

A child died. Traffic control is not a priority.

12

acedelaf t1_iyrq50d wrote

It totally is, a 5 hour traffic jam is an emergency, so many things can happen. A Dr in that traffic jam going to the hospital for an emergency procedure to save another child is just as much or more important

−2

S4mm1 t1_iyruw74 wrote

This is why there are escorts in that situation, and people who need emergency services contact 911. Please don't talk about things you obviously don't understand.

5

acedelaf t1_iyu356t wrote

It's a hypothetical situation trying to show there's an infinite number of just as important possibilities of why traffic control is critical. Traffic control is not exclusive of rescue services. You can have both things, this is a first world country with resources.

−1

TimbersawDust t1_iyr5ui7 wrote

My brother, a helicopter had to land on 29 to take someone to shock trauma. You getting your jalapeño poppers shouldn’t be prioritizing over trying to save lives.

8

acedelaf t1_iyrps52 wrote

I didn't say that, stop putting words in my mouth. One thing doesn't exclude the other. You can have rescue operations and traffic control at the same time. Are there only 4 cops in the entire county? What if someone had an emergency and was going to the hospital? A 5 hour traffic jam is an emergency

−3

TimbersawDust t1_iyrr6o6 wrote

You’re right. However, what you just stated didn’t actually happen, and a helicopter needing to take person(s) to shock trauma did. You are not an EMT, you are not a police officer, you are not an EMS employee, so please stop acting like you know better than the folks who’s job it is to do this stuff.

acedelaf t1_iys8zs0 wrote

Please tell me what's wrong with asking for traffic control in this situation and how it's not a priority? I was able to get out after 3 hours just because one cop let ppl exit by 100 on ramp. I don't have to be a plumber to know there's a leak

−1

TimbersawDust t1_iys9b8z wrote

Nothing. But a Reddit post isn’t the place to do so. Call the county and provide your input. Posting your opinion here just opens the door for criticism and won’t result in any action, if it is just.
