Is it me or are most of those dogs pits?

That’s how it is in animal shelters, it has been this way for as long as I can remember. People don’t get their dogs fixed and the cycle continues. Dogs that aren’t pits get adopted pretty quickly.

They do a lot of rescue work in Waterbury (hence the name Brass City). Plenty of irresponsible pit owners there. And of course when little Becky and her family are out shopping the shelters for a dog I can tell you which dog they aren't going to pick so Pits stay a lot longer in shelters.

Because that’s the most common stray street dog.

No one actually wants to try to catch them, for obvious reasons, so animal control comes in and dumps them off to the shelters.

What’s stopping someone from adopting a dog and placing it at a different shelter?

I tried to get a rescue from two different shelters. Both times the process and who they have to interview just to get the dog is a huge turn off. I get it, it’s to deter the bad ones. But it shouldn’t be like applying for a mortgage or getting classified clearance....

Applying for a mortgage is often not as difficult as adopting a dog. I've seen places not want to place dogs with people that had to leave their homes to go to work. Granted there's a lot more remote work happening now but this was precovid. Some of them had such impossibly high standards that it would have excluded almost everyone on the planet. Not sure why someone with a job is worse than a dog living in a shelter.

FYI I didn’t mean this is a negative context. I just mean if they can’t find fosters for all the dogs, I wonder if they’ll just end up at a different shelter? Hopefully not euthanized

It always was a shitty shelter and I’m glad it’s closing. I do hope the animals can be rescued

If the facility is closing why are they charging a fee?

Rescues pay for food, vet, and other expenses for the pups - often including covering expenses for spaying/neutering pets. Even though they’re closing, they still put money into the dogs that need to be adopted. I also think charging a fee reduces the chances of these dogs being picked up for things like being used for dog fighting or other similar activities. But that’s just my own opinion on it.

Edit: It also says they’re closing for a few months, so could be they want to reopen once the workers’ health issues subside.
