Ramble On is another great Led Zep song that 100% has LOTR references.
My first project I’d appreciate if you’d could give it a listen (thank you) https://on.soundcloud.com/qDy7m7tjBdKoUVSj7
Amazing song. Beautifully crafted. Could go the rest of my life without hearing it again though. Bit over played.
It's widely regarded as the single greatest rock and roll song of all time and I find that difficult to disagree with. It really captures the essence of the band, the era it defined, and the aesthetic that it gave birth to. The musical progression of the song has been described as 'orgasmic'. When Jack Black created his "Tribute" to the greatest song in the world, it was a musical salute to this song.
It's a good track.
Not the best Zeppelin song by far but it's part of my life growing up in the 70s and 80s. Good good stuff.
Best scene
It's a masterpiece. I don't go out of my way to listen to it because I've heard it so much, but it's still a fantastic song.
It's a good enough song but there are other songs and albums that I like more.
It is one of those songs that are almost impossible to separate from my teenage years. In the late 70s, early 80s, every school dance ended with Stairway to Heaven.
I wish our school dances were like that. Ours now a days are mostly rap and more commercial pop
It’s a masterpiece and a classic. Like any song you can listen to it too much of course. Still there’s no denying how great it is.
The song came out the summer I read the books. I immediately knew what it was about. Friends who hadn't read LOTR thought I was crazy.
Boomer pablum
It's a good song until the end when it becomes incredibly amazing
Great song
The last part you like wouldn’t make any sense as a stand-alone song. The build is what makes it such a great payoff.
I always think of No Quarter while they're crossing the Pass at Caradhras.
It's good, but I'd doubt it would be in Zeppelins top 20 songs. Apparently Robert Plant hated it and refused to play it live for years.
A phenominal song that 99.9999999999% of modern day artists couldn't dream of composing and writing
This is the best answer. Also… highly overlooked aspect of the song: 1) the perspective of the lyrics travels through third person to direct address as the song gets more involved. and 2) Robert Plant mentioned that Page and him wrote most of it in one sitting.
It's one of the greatest rock songs in history. One of the first epic songs to give us a slow burn into one of the biggest song finales of all time. You wouldn't have Bohemian Rhapsody without it (another great).
That being said, after hearing it for decades, I don't need to ever hear it again.
Yeah that’s fair
I read that Plant wrote the lyrics in less than a hour. Just threw in a few vague tolkien quotes and the rest was meaningless. He hated it (apparently) I think its cool . Nowhere near their best stuff though
Excellent piece of music. Love it
Great song and if your a guitar player learning stairway is fun with the different guitar styles in the song cheers to Jimmy Page
Honestly it’s a great song but the guitar solo is really the only part I particularly enjoy
It’s the devils music but dam is it fantastic
I don't get it. Lyrics are atrocious and the so called 'greatest guitar solo ever' is the most unimaginative stuff on the guitar I've heard. All I hear is 'ploink ploink ploink'. I struggle to even stay focused enough to listen until the end.
So you’re a fan of heavier stuff. I prefer the earlier parts as it slowly builds with the Fender Rhodes coming in. Each to their own.
At the time it was a bit novel having a song that long but the Beatles kicked that door open with Hey Jude.
I don't need to hear it again.
It's a great practice song
It’s a great song. I’ve heard it a million times in my life and it’s still a great song. The guitar solo never gets old or boring, and the entire song is very well engineered.
I thought it was the best song ever made, when I was new to rock music when I was like 15/16...don't get me wrong it's alright but there's much better.
Back in the 70s, the song had a vibe to it that was special. It fit in with the album and you listened to it as it came up after The Battle Of Evermore. As FM radio sprang up, it was a rare occasion to hear it. Now it’s just another over played song . I always saw it as a piece of an amazing album
Oh yes, let's shit on modern artists just because.
Another post where the OP just needs attention by asking about what people think about one of the most famous songs ever.
Dolly Parton recorded a great cover.
I was also at a show where the band played Stairway to Heaven, but the lyrics were The Ballad of Gilligan’s Island.
Great freaking song
I think the reason it's so good later on is because of the build up through out the song. It's an amazing experience all the way.
Great song, never heard it.
Zappa did an excellent cover as well. Guitar solo was done with brass
Good song. Overhyped, overplayed.
Could’ve been one of the greatest songs ever is Led Zeppelin didn’t steal it from someone else.
The only appropriate take.
I feel like it was overplayed about 15 years ago and before.. but I almost feel like it’s never played anymore. I seriously can’t remember the last time I heard it.. radio , pandora friends you name it. I agree with your other thoughts though
Bad.
I always imagined that in The Hobbit, when Thorin’s company come upon the wood elves revelry in Mirkwood, “Bron-Y-Aur” stomp is being played.
Am I glad it exists? Yes.
Is it a work of art? Yes.
Do I want to listen to it right now? No thanks.
Horribly over rated song IMO. For years, when the radio stations would play the number one song ever, it was always either that, or Freebird. Both over rated.
Sounds great when played backwards.
It's a great track and I can't help but think Hans Zimmer nicked it for Jack Sparrow's Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Listen and tell me I'm wrong.
Battle of Evermore was also very LOTR feeling!
it was my parents wedding song, so now when i hear it, i start laughing, because that’s a weird fucking wedding song.
The drumming is otherworldly
One of my fav solos
Borrrrring
The mix of the 6 string and the 12 string (both electric) parts are sublime.
If you hear Jimmy Page talk about the song it brings clarity. He explains that the song slowly builds and by the end reaches it’s climax. If you listen you notice this but to hear him and understand that the song was crafted that way to have that impact. Brilliant and most listeners don’t exactly pick up on it but this is the foundation of the song, secret sauce!

I love it. Mostly because I’m a huge Robert plant fan and Lord of the Rings fan. My partner and I have convinced each other it’s about Galadriel from LOTR when she brings Frodo to the looking glass to see his possible futures 🤯
