News outlets reporting mostly crime is why people think that crime is always on an upswing even when it is on a downswing.

As a former newspaper editor (lol high school), the front lage should be eclectic

My grandma used to say this to me over 20 years ago. She watched the news and would say “there’s so much crime on TV now! There didn’t used to be back in my day, even though there’s less crime now.” She was a clever lady so she saw through that shit and never gave into fear mongering

Hey, that's my local paper.

And it really creeped me out that the Idaho murderer was arrested in the township next door to mine and that he'd been here since Christmas.

Right?! I went to high school with him, and it’s crazy to think someone like that has been living HERE among us for the past 20+ years until August when he went out to Washington

And yet no one I know who went to PV, NCC, or who live in Indian Mountain Lakes seems to have met or known him. He was like a ghost.

If you read it says they are the top 5 articles of 2022 for the paper. Those all happened this year

It’s very cynical but that’s the kind of stuff people want to read.

Side note, why the hell are the Columbia County people saying they are “pursuing death penalty.” There hasn’t been an execution here in almost 30 years. The state legislature really needs to get that off books already.

Historical-Recipe892 t1_j2i4cqs wrote

As someone who owns a hyperlocal digital outlet, I can say with confidence these were the most read stories for the year.

We can publish all the "feel-good" stories we want, but the number of people who read them will be dwarfed by anything crime-related.

You want the news to cover more of the good in your community? Start reading those stories and stop reading the crime.

ifeelwitty t1_j2je1dr wrote

I was a features reporter for seven years who also had to write the hard news stuff. The "fluffy" human interest feel-good stuff I hardly got responses to. The stories on crimes, politics? I always got emails or tweets about those stories.

Insterstellar t1_j2jmevt wrote

I just don't read local news unless I am googling for something specific. There is nothing in it I really need to know. Its kinda like smoking: addictive, but bad for your (mental) health. I'm sure cherry-picking the worst tragedies in your community gets lots of clicks and ad revenue (or subscription fees), but it creates a distorted & depressing view of the world. Feel good fluff is also pointless, and also leads to an inaccurate view of the world.

2

Historical-Recipe892 t1_j2kjbwe wrote

So much of what actually impacts your daily life is decided locally, and isn't going to be covered by any other outlet. Unless you regularly attend local municipality meetings (which everyone should, btw), you're in the dark about pretty important things.

OscarTangoIndiaMike t1_j2k8qki wrote

For my local paper, anything aside from crime is behind a paywall. I’m not going to pay to read some bullshit put out by Gannett with USA Today on the cover.

0

GraciousCinnamonRoll t1_j2htf0x wrote

It literally says those are the year's top 10 stories so it's not like those all happened in one day. Besides, I'm sure people would be more upset if those events weren't covered.

20

miscnic t1_j2hxb2x wrote

Sad that it seems you missed the point entirely that the front page is showing a few of The Top 10 Stories of the Year…which appear to be all about death….which is the actually the sad part.

A well done local paper is worth its weight in gold, in terms of giving you an idea what’s actually going on in the community. The above is just evolutionary clickbait that triggers the fear response

I keep a TV-B-GONE on me at all times for just such an occasion. It is small enough that you can easily palm it and it has around a 95% success rate in turning off TVs.

Many times the wait staff doesn't even have access to the remotes to turn the tvs back on. Blissful silence reigns again.

They think good news doesn’t sell. I have never bought a new paper. Id like too. I can’t because it will put my mind into a bad/negative state. That’s not healthy. It’s also easier to dwell in the negative than it is to come up with something positive. Always strive for positive. I believe the media will come to this point in the future.
