They lost a lawsuit, and basically have told the court to go fuck themselves because they didn't like the outcome.

Sounds about right.

I know the story. Even met the owner of the Tesla with the problematic plate. If you ask me there are a lot worse things that could be your license plate.

All I want is my vanity plates. This is getting out of hand.

t1_j9vt8x5 wrote

I still want 5TTu8 so it says butts in the rear view

t1_j9vccr0 wrote

What’s the problematic plate? First I’ve heard of it. I’ve been trying to think of a good plate for my Wrangler and was completely unaware they weren’t issuing vanity’s anymore.

t1_j9vd0nf wrote

Was it FKGAS?

Edit: it is—you can see it in the picture.

31

t1_j9vzi50 wrote

Which picture?

Edit: nvm it’s in the text in this picture of the newspaper lol. I was looking for a pic of the car itself!

t1_j9wq33k wrote

I have been trying to figure out the offensiveness of FKGAS acronym and cannot. Can someone please help me?

I had no idea there was a story. I just knew it had been a while since they opened up vanity plate applications (I’m a recent transplant).

Why do vanity plates matter?

−1

OP t1_j9wt0z5 wrote

They don't. But I want one and I can't get one. I just want one because I am a car guy and came up with a vanity plate that is fitting for my car. It doesn't contain any profanity.

t1_j9vf69r wrote

Our DMV is pretty rogue. There's a similar issue with them refusing to issue plates for kei trucks. They don't have a legal basis, so they just refuse to do their job.

25

t1_j9vvmyu wrote

No Kei Truck plates!!!! I dodged a bullet there, I lost an auction a couple of months ago; end up with a Tacoma instead.

14

t1_j9xb9vs wrote

Bro fellow Kei enthusiast here. I have battled the DMV for months about this. Seems their is big money pressing against kei cars.

9

t1_j9vauxn wrote

Utah also suspended their vanity plates too because they were afraid of what people would request. It’s really stupid.

The other change I’d like to see Rhode Island make is allowing 7 characters. Their font would fit it.

I moved over 20 years ago. Lol.

However, I still have a bunch of family in New England so I’m up here a lot. However, it’s 70 and sunny today in NC so I can’t say the same for today but I do love New England. Lol

Yeah I know that if I moved back, I'd miss stuff here and want to return. I hope you get a bunch of special food while in RI; we have some great stuff up there. I actually really, really miss the Greek style pizza (house-of-pizza style)

t1_j9x877o wrote

How about getting rid of the front plates like civilized people? I feel bad to drill holes in my poor cars.

Just don't put one on as long as you're not driving a beater they won't bother you. From my experience

1

t1_j9xc6r7 wrote

As RI ever been rear only?

0

OP t1_j9y5emg wrote

I don't think RI has been rear only for a long time, except for certain plates, motorcycle, trailer, dealer, and transporter plates all require only 1 read facing plate.

t1_j9vw3da wrote

I still don’t understand why we have people pearl clutching at license plates with profanity on them. How they hell does that affect one’s driving? It’s no different that having a decal that reads “fuck.”

16

OP t1_j9y5lno wrote

Can't have a plate with a slightly bad word on it, but hell take a ride to Foster/ Glocester and you will see trucks with Trump stickers flying flags that say "FUCK BIDEN"

t1_j9vhn0m wrote

I'm just happy that the process of forcing me to switch to the new ugly plate design has been delayed.

15

t1_j9x5vng wrote

Wait, we HAVE to get rid of our old plates??? In that case I’m gonna try to get the Mr Potato Head Food Bank one

13

t1_j9yuu8c wrote

As of 1 Jan all new registrations, replacements for lost or damaged plates, and registration renewals will result in you receiving the new plate design. has also replied to my comment saying that the renewal plates already have the stickers attached to them.

The DMV doesn't want old plates turned in. I've had my plates since 1997 and there's actually some sentimental value, so I'm glad I can hold onto them.

3

t1_j9yn43x wrote

They sent me the new ones when I renewed my registration. It came with the sticker on them so I can’t continue to use the old ones. So eventually it will catch up to everyone.

OP t1_j9vibx8 wrote

I finally got my hybrid plate. I wont be giving it up.

1

t1_j9ybsm5 wrote

Did they change the EV plate too? Green waves of same design?

3

OP t1_j9yl0dq wrote

As far as I know they only redesigned the generic plates. But I will do my best to keep my green wave plate and not switch to the new style. If they have a new green wave I'll be all about it.

I like my green wave and don't want to give it up.

I just want the fucking Bruins plates already

Same, it’s been almost a year since they took my deposit, thankfully they gave me free tickets to a game last year for that, so that was fun

t1_j9velnr wrote

Pathetic - I guess the state doesn’t need the revenue from vanity plates

8

t1_j9via01 wrote

IDK how many vanity plates they'd be issuing in a year but I'm guessing the state doesn't notice that money one way or the other.

4

t1_j9vqg0q wrote

Even if the full $2.4m is accurate that’s 6 hours of our $4.1b budget

2

t1_j9vxjk2 wrote

It's even less significant than that. That 2.4 million is probably from the time that vanity plates became available until now. A ProJo article said there's about 25,000 currently registered vanity plates right now, but they're only getting the $75-80 or whatever it is one single time per plate. Some of the active ones have been around for years, or decades even.

If I had to guess, I'd imagine that there's way less than 1,000 new ones issued in a normal year.

2

t1_jabg14u wrote

I don’t think it’s just a one time fee though. I got one 4 years ago without reading the fine print and a few months later my registration renewal came due and it was something like $100 more just because I had vanity plates. Changed them back to the normal plates so I didn’t have to pay the increased renewal fee.

1

t1_j9xsedm wrote

If you know a guy you can still get them. Connected people have them

OP t1_j9w92os wrote

Me and my wife frequently vacation up there, we have an ongoing joke that when you register your car in NH they offer you a vanity plate for free because everyone has them.

10

t1_j9wwkln wrote

Why would you want a unique identifier which would make it much easier for someone to track/target your vehicle and by extension your home and yourself?

4

OP t1_j9y2e5f wrote

My car already stands out. When I drive by, people notice my car. A license plate won't make a difference at this point.

I've heard it my whole life, these flashy cars make you stand out, why are you wasting money on your cars?

Plus a license plate is a unique identifier to every vehicle, whether it be vanity or not. No one else will have your same plate.

7

t1_j9y5ay9 wrote

If things are that serious where someone is actively trying to track you down, it won’t matter if you have a vanity plate or not, they’ll remember your plate either way

5

I saw one today that said DDYMUSK. I think it goes without saying that it was on a Tesla.

3

Wanna hear why they stopped issue plates ? AHAHAHAH I made a request for a plate named “four20” and the next day the processing server was down for good. I have proof and will upload it. Sorry guys.

3

They lost a lawsuit then cried about it. As if it’s even their mandate to regulate free vs offensive speech.

After reading this thread it’s shocking how many people fall into the following.

  1. Don’t like bad words on license plates.

  2. Hate free speech.

  3. Love the DMV and govt bureaucracy

D. All of the above. People give way too many ducks about what other people do that has zero bearing on their everyday lives.

Because I have a view point opposite of yours does not make me a troll. Rhode Island has sour grapes.

1

OP t1_j9zruo4 wrote

I don't get your opposite view point tho? You don't want RI to have vanity plates? You don't like bad words? You don't like wasting money on material things as a vanity plate?

I think I seriously got the last vanity plate.

1

t1_j9wxx8e wrote

Not quite the same but when i moved back to RI in 2020 i requested a ‘specialty’ plate from the governors office. It was just my moms plate from like the 70s, 1 letter three numbers. Still haven’t heard from them.

OP t1_j9y2hcr wrote

You won't hear back either. Low number digit plates people.hold onto like gold. My aunt has a 4 digit plate that been in her family a long time.

I wouldn’t give any more money to the state they take enough

−1

t1_j9w7q19 wrote

They don’t want “FUCK” and “POOP” on a vanity plate. So they will have sour grapes and never approve any. 1st amendment and the court case have proved they need to approve “naughty” vanity plates.

−1

t1_j9ydkvc wrote

I think most other states with vanity plates have restrictions against what they deem profanity. Why is it that Rhode Island is being such a little bitch about it?

1

t1_j9z8isl wrote

Incorrect. States can no longer do that. It’s free speech. The Supreme Court has ruled on the matter. Having FKGAS or BOOB is now constitutionally protected speech. So instead of allowing DICK on a license plate they stopped issuing any vanity plates. My place “BALLZ” has been pending.

1

OP t1_j9w9iuo wrote

Well if I can't swear in online gaming chats, then there are bots out there to scan for profanity. You have to upload your desired txt to the internet regardless, why can't they just put something like that on there?

I'm not computer genius, but doesn't seem like rocket science.

Pretty sure the guy said it was supposed to be fake gas, not fuck gas. Nobody uses fk as abbreviation for fuck, there's F, FU, Fck or F*ck. If a person wanted fuck gas it would probably be FUGAS, FGAS, EFFGAS.
